HomeMy WebLinkAbout68-06 • I RESOLUTION NO. 68-06 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS IN SUPPORT OF THE TOBACCO TAX ACT OF 2006 (Proposition 86) WHEREAS, cigarette smoking is a known cause of disease, disability and death; and WHEREAS, the Tobacco Tax Act of 2006 will reduce smoking, especially among children, and fund critical healthcare priorities such as disease prevention,medical research, children's health insurance and emergency room care; and WHEREAS, this statewide initiative will raise approximately $2.1 billion annually by increasing the state sales tax on a pack of cigarettes by $2.60 and strict safeguards and audits are included in the Tobacco Tax Act of 2006 to ensure funds will go where the voters intend; and WHEREAS, the Tobacco Tax Act of 2006 is supported by a broad coalition of organizations including the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association of California, and the California Hospital Association. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the Town of Los Altos Hills joins this notable coalition of health organizations and family agencies in support of the Tobacco Tax Act of 2006. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk forward a copy of this Resolution at the earliest possible date after its adoption to the Coalition for a Healthy California and to the Town's legislative representatives in Sacramento,the Speaker of the California Assembly, Senate President Pro Tempore and to the Governor.
