HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 21Town of Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee (Amended, Corrected and Condensed 9/26/17) Meeting Time: Monday August 21 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Meeting Place: Parks and Recreation Building 26379 Fremont Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022 1. Call to Order/Roll Call (Quorum = 5) Chair: Ingrid Sperrow Vice Chair: Scott Vanderlip Secretary: Kathy Evans Members: Patty Radlo, Liza Reichert, Champa Sreenivas, Nina Sutaria, Julia Zarcone Staff Liaison: Sarah Robustelli Council Liaison: John Radford Associate Members: Jim Basiji, Alisa Bredo, Kit Gordon, Rebecca Hickman, Yoko Hughes, Helena Kaarlson, Kjell Kaarlson, Karen Lemes, Theresa Martin, Val Metcalf, Craig Murray Vote taken to add new Associate Members: Craig Murray, Alisa Bredo and Theresa Martin. Nominated by Kathy Evans, seconded by Patty Radlo. Unanimously approved. Welcome Back Committee Members! Discuss Expectations for involvement. The meeting was called to order on time by Chairman Ingrid Sperow. Scott Vanderlip and Julia Zarcone were absent. 2. Review Past Minutes - (June / No July. Mtg) Unanimously approved with addition of Liza’s name at the end as Secretary. 3. Public Comments: (List Members of the public present): Alisa Bredo (LAHHA), Theresa Martin (VDE), Craig Murray (The Garden). Voted in 4. Program Update: Spring/Summer classes – Sarah Robustelli a.Total participation numbers from the summer classes. b.Classes cancelled at the last minute due to lower than expected enrollment. In the future we should try to run the classes anyway. Possibly talk to instructors about running classes with lower enrollment. c.Timing of classes important: end of July is usually lower enrollment. d.TeePee for Ohlone Camp:not put up in Byrne Preserve this year because of recent fire in Byrne Preserve. Past years Tee Pee was vandalized so committee needs to discuss future use of TeePee.Schedule to discuss this again at a future meeting. Will depend on fire danger as well, but this is an icon for the program and was missed this year. 5. Establish This Years Goals for Programming: (from informal dot chart survey) a. Sarah presented the P&R budget information as well as the dot chart results from the Town Picnic. This was an informal survey conducted by P&R to ask residents what they thought we needed in town. b. Based on this feedback from residents, the committee discussed goals for the year. c. Renew efforts for expanded Parks and Rec space. d. Explore property, new construction and/or Town owned property, e. Explore options to establish a Community Garden in Town, at a Town controlled property. f. Movie screen purchase: research option for resident Movie Nights. *Many of the top dot winners would be addressed with the addition of a expanded space. Programming Continued: Sarah announced new Italian cooking classes in the Activity Guide. Trick or Treat Event at Town Hall October 26th 11-12 noon, (3+ years). Kathy agreed to look into adding a costumed element geared toward preschoolers, Craig Murray will explore possibility of offering gardening classes Book Club: Champa is interested and will bring ideas to next meeting. Karen Lemes announced that she has resigned from the Joint Senior Commission with Los Altos. Need to find another candidate from LAH to also attend those meetings. Short-term and long-term goals for this year: 1) Movie Nights 2) Community Center 3) Community Garden Ingrid presented a bubble chart of her understanding of the current Parks and Recreation distribution of labor. It listed all the areas P&R is involved with, and the sub committees and who sits on each sub committee. The committee members made changes accordingly. Ingrid suggested that Parks and Rec. members could post new classes and activities on Next Door. Text can be copied from the Activity Guide and provide a link to the guide. Activity Guide is now online, in two versions, a normal PDF and an interactive version that provides links to emails and web pages. Alisa Bredo was asked to find an old article on horse safety for the fall newsletter 6. Upcoming P&R Community Building Events: LAH Family Campout and Movie Night 8/18 Sarah reported that there were 107 participants at this 1st event and it was very successful. A survey has been sent out to participants gather feedback on what can be done better next time. Sarah will report at the next meeting on the results of the survey. Hoedown 2017 September 9, 3-8pm 7) All committee members have completed required BROWN ACT training! 8) Old Business: Follow up on P & R staff hiring. 9) Set Next Meetings: 3rd Monday 5:50 – 6:30pm - 9/18, 10/11 Council Presentation, 10/16, *11/13 special, No mtg in Dec., 1/15, 12.
