Regular Meeting Minutes
Members Present: Chair Kathy Evans, Secretary Patty Radlo, Champa Sreenivas, Kit
Gordon, Rebecca Hickman, Val Metcalfe, Staff: Sarah Gualtieri
Guests: Mayor John Radford
Call to Order: 9:08 a.m.
Bark for the Park
Rebecca Hickman gave PRC members a handout with information on the proposed
“natural” dog park in Town. A dog park was one of the highest ranking requests by
residents on the last Town survey. Being non-leash, it would also mitigate the illegal off-
leash occurrences in Byrne Preserve. The proposed location is near the corner of
Purissima Road and Elena Road, and the LAH Corporation Yard. Parking is available at
the Corp Yard and some limited parking is also available at the corner of Elena and
Purissima. The park will be a natural, low maintenance area surrounded by a 5’ black
cyclone fence with a double gate. No leveling will be done, however some brush removal
will be needed. Benches, a poop bag dispenser and two trash cans will be installed. A
water line will need to be run from the Corp Yard to the Dog Park. Kit Gordon suggested
that Art in Public Places be contacted to secure a possible dog-themed contribution.
Richard Chiu is currently working on budget numbers for the Dog Park.
Motion: The members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee at
their June 9, 2014 regular meeting voted unanimously to proceed with the proposal
for a natural Dog Park located near the corner of Purissima and Elena Roads on
Town owned land.
Motion Val Metcalfe/second Rebecca Hickman
Westwind Barn Update
Council liaison Mayor John Radford discussed with the PRC how to move forward at
Westwind Barn. He stated that the ultimate goal is to reduce the Town’s subsidy of the
barn. He charged the PRC members to come up with a clear idea of what direction the
PRC will give to barn manager Torie Dye, and to clearly identify what her focus should
be. The PRC discussed and concluded that the goal is to build a thriving community at the
barn and to provide a pathway for riders to progress through the beginning levels of
horsemanship to more advanced levels, and that Torie should provide that environment.
Sarah Gualtieri provided some statistics on the lesson program:
- March – 150 lessons (reflects a partial month)
- April – 303 lessons
- May – 340 lessons
Sarah will provide the committee with a complete work-up of numbers for boarding,
lessons, and camps at the September meeting.
Torie Dye gave PRC members a handout of the WWB May Monthly Report for review.
As of May 31, the barn has 31 boarders, up from 23 boarders in February. Torie
anticipates 3 new boarders for June. Boarding rates will be increased beginning July 1,
with boarders given notice in June. Torie is also going to review and update the WWB
portion of the Town’s website.
Spring/Summer Class Update
Preschool Playgroup – Champa Sreenivas reported that at the Town Picnic there were
quite a few families expressing interest in joining the preschool playgroup.
Baby Sitter Training – Sarah is working on a new date for the next class.
Lil’Rollers Skateboarding Camp – Sarah is hoping that at least 2 of the 3 sessions will go
forward. Sarah is getting a brochure from the instructor to help in marketing the class.
Bodyweight Boot Camp – Sarah wants to put a picture from this camp on the next
Activity Guide cover. Registration is going well for all three sessions.
Fit-Fun Fitness – did not do well, all three sessions canceled. Sarah thinks the time of day
the class was offered was an issue. Also, the class description needs to be more positive,
currently the class sounds like it is only for older, weak participants. The description
needs to emphasize increasing strength and balance.
Sarah gave PRC members a handout with the production dates for the Fall/Winter Activity
Guide.
Summer Intern
Sarah had over 80 applications for the position. The person she hired is currently a
student at Foothill College and will be transferring to USD this fall. She will work on
revising and updating the Town’s current Field Use Policy as well as working on
marketing for current camps.
Approval of Minutes
May minutes – approved as amended
Motion Val Metcalfe/second Champa Sreenivas
Donated Art Program
The PRC discussed the possibility of placing some of the donated art at the Parks and Rec
Building and at WWB. Karen Druker will be asked if pictures in the art binder can be
posted on-line. It was also discussed whether the mother/fawn statue should be placed at
Edith Park.
Motion – The members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee voted
unanimously at their June 9, 2014 regular meeting to go forward with installing the
statue of the mother and fawn in Edith Park.
Motion Rebecca Hickman/Second Val Metcalfe
New Business
PRC member Kit Gordon informed the committee that she is resigning as a member of the
PRC. She is planning on going to Associate Member status. Kit will continue to work
with Sarah on proof reading the Activity Guides before publication.
Meeting adjourned 10:28 a.m.
Next meeting is a Special Meeting due to date change – August 18, 2014 at the Parks and
Recreation Building.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Radlo, secretary
