HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 12LOS ALTOS HILL PARKS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 12. 2013 Members Present: Chair Kathy Evans, Vice-Chair Kavita Tankha, Rebecca Hickman, Patty Radlo, Val Metcalfe, Julia Zarcone, Community Services Supervisor Sarah Gualtieri. Guest(s): Nancy Couperus Call to Order: 9:04 a.m. Approval of Minutes June and July meeting minutes approved as written. -- motion Val Metcalfe/second Rebecca Hickman Public Comment Nancy Couperus spoke to the PRC regarding coyotes at Westwind Communit y Barn. It is currently “denning” season and coyotes have been more aggressive towards hikers and dogs. Barn Manager Rita has sent an email to all boarders notifying them of two recent incidents of aggressive behavior towards dogs and owners. Flyers have been posted at all 4 entrances warning hikers and reminding owners to keep dogs on leash. Summer Update Sarah Gualtieri reported that all of the summer classes/programming is now finished. Several camps had to be cancelled due to low enrollment, including Basketball and Ohlone. British Soccer ran despite low enrollment. Fall Preview Sarah showed the PRC a draft copy of the Fall Activity Guide, with seniors/adults featured on the cover. It is also stated within the guide that the YRRP will be returning and boarding information is given. New senior classes being offered are Stepping On, Elder Fraud, Baby Boomer Blast, Technology for Seniors, and Old Timers Gathering. Also new for fall is Smart Irrigation Technology and Climate Suitable Landscapes. The Recyclables Tour will also be offered again. Classes for youth include Babysitter’s Training, Iron Chef Challenge, Valentine’s Day Treats Special, a Ski and Snowboard program, Paddleboarding, and Mandarin. Family classes include Family in the Kitchen, and Stanford vs. SJSU Spartans football game. Town Newsletter The deadline for submission for the next Town Newsletter is October 1. The PRC discussed having an article on the Foothill College and Parks and Recreation programs collaboration. Hoedown Kathy reported that preparations are going well. Volunteers are needed for the event – Patty Radlo will try and get student volunteers for the event. Youth Commission Sarah has had a meeting with the new co-chairs of the Youth Commission. They are working on a calendar of events for the year. Their first meeting of the year will be on August 20th. Facilities Update WWCB: Sarah reported to the PRC that two proposals were submitted for the Westwind Community Barn RFP. The proposals have been submitted to the Evaluations Committee for review. Sarah gave an update on barn rodent control. Barn manager Rita is working with the 4-H Riding Program on their participation in rodent control. The PRC discussed the possibility of having a feral cat community to help with rodent abatement. Julia Zarcone will look into this and report back to the committee. Purissima Fields: Sarah reported that rental of the fields has increased. O’Keefe: The Los Altos School District has expressed interest in purchasing the Town owned property at O’Keefe for a possible elementary school site. Currently the Open Space Committee has begun restoration at the site. They are working on creek cleanup and on a proposal for some trails on the site. Old Business The possibility of having an intern to help Sarah was discussed. Patty Radlo will look into both Foothill College and SJSU for possible internship opportunities and get contact information to Sarah. Val Metcalfe told the PRC that there was a home break-in up near Altamont Road. There has been an increase in home burglaries this summer in Los Altos Hills.
