Public Comment
Heather Rose spoke to the PRC regarding how to get information on child friendly
hikes on Town Pathways. The committee recommended PRC member Scott
Vanderlip as a good resource for this information.
Nancy Couperus commented on the work being done on the lofts at WWB. She
stated that sufficient notice of this work was not given, so scheduled veterinarian
appointments and the 4-H Riding Program had to be cancelled. She requested
going forward, that communication by the Town be done in a more timely manner.
Los Altos Hills Family
Jennifer Carlstrom from LAHF distributed a proposed budget for this year’s Easter
Egg Hunt. LAHF is proposing a budget of $1090.00, which includes candy, prizes,
treasures, and help at the event. After discussion, the LAHF budget was approved.
Motion Julia Zarcone/second Kathy Evans
WWB Subcommittee Report
The deadline for RFPs to be submitted was last Friday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. Sarah
Gualtieri reported that the Town received a total of 5 proposals. These proposals
will be reviewed this week by a group including Carl Cahill, Yulia Rasulova, Debbie
Pedro, Sarah Gualtieri, WWB subcommittee member Val Metcalfe, and FIC member
Kjell Karlsson. Town staff will give a contract recommendation to Council by May
16, 2013.
The Town wants this process to be as transparent as possible for all parties.
Current WWB boarders will be encouraged to contact Sarah Gualtieri with any
questions.
Julia Zarcone brought up a potential issue regarding integrative pest management.
She commented that the PRC has worked very hard over the course of the past few
months to have an eco-friendly pest control policy in place. She stated that the
Town should make sure that the chosen vendor adheres to the standard that the
PRC has established.
Summer Programs Update
Sarah Gualtieri reported to the PRC that she dropped off a second round of Activity
Guides at the Los Altos Library.
The summer riding programs and Lego Flix class are very popular, and there is a
waiting list for the Recyclables Processing Tour. The Fun with Ceramics class, in
partnership with Foothill has poor enrollment. PRC members suggested creating a
flyer to be sent to the teacher’s contacts and resources. Also, Karen Druker would
be a good resource. Heather Rose suggested sending information to LASD schools
through their weekly newsletters. The Los Altos Parks and Recreation Department
currently advertises their classes in this manner.
Hoppin’ Hounds
Hoppin’ Hounds will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m. at Byrne Preserve
and the requested $5.00 donation will benefit the Palo Alto Animal Shelter.
Earth Day
Earth Day events will be held on Sunday, March 21, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Nancy
Couperus stated that the “Live Cats” have been confirmed. The Youth Commission
will be doing a leaf rubbing craft as well as a trash recycling presentation.
Sarah Gualtieri is organizing a Pathways clean-up for Earth Day, with several local
schools participating by cleaning up a designated Pathway.
Pathways Run
The date for this year’s run is Saturday, May 11. Sarah Gualtieri reported that the
tee shirts for both the runners and key volunteers have been ordered. Any extra
shirts will be donated to Stanford Hospital. This year medals will be given to the
participants.
Youth Commission
The members of the Youth Commission are in the process of developing a
Leadership Conference for local youth. The conference will be held on Sunday, April
28 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Town Hall. Youth Commission members are
currently recruiting potential speakers for panels and small group discussions.
New Business
Rebecca Hickman reported to the PRC that the Town is filing for a grant from the
water district to restore the O’Keefe Preserve. The restoration would include
removal of invasive plants, replaced by California native plants and restoration of
the riparian habitat. The Town is requesting letters of support from Town Standing
Committees and various non-profits.
Kathy Evans brought up the topic of extra help for Sarah Gultieri, which has been
discussed in previous PRC meetings. She is concerned that staffing may change
depending on what happens regarding the change of management at WWB. Kathy
requested that this issue be revisited at the PRC’s next meeting.
Next meeting is 4/1/2013 at 9:00 a.m. in the Parks and Rec Building
Meeting adjourned 10:02 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Radlo
