HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 7LOS ALTOS HILLS PARKS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 7, 2013 Members Present: Chair Kathy Evans, Vice-Chair Kavita Tankha, Julia Zarcone, Val Metcalfe, Kit Gordon, Rebecca Hickman, Patty Radlo, Scott Vanderlip, Council Liaison Courtenay Corrigan. Guests: Nancy Couperus, Jennifer Carlstrom Call to Order: 9:04 a.m. Meeting Minutes September meeting minutes approved as written. Motion Julia Zarcone/second Scott Vanderlip Written Update from Sarah Gualtieri Kathy Evans gave an update on behalf of Sarah Gualtieri. -Baby Boomer Blast cancelled, looking for help to market next classes; free demos have had zero attendance; P & R is partnering with Los Altos Senior Center to try and fill Session 3 -Bone Smart Movement has 6 registered, Dog Obedience has 9 registered -Babysitter Training needs more registrants -Barn Lighting, Caroling in the Hills, Gingerbread Making Class have all been submitted to Our Town -A Dog Jumping Event and Potluck was held Sunday, October 6th at WWCB. -Abol will begin rodent abatement at WWCB on October 8th, using the carbon dioxide method. Purissima Fields will continue to be serviced by the trapper service.. -The drainage project on Fields 2 and 3 at Purissima Fields has been completed.. -An intern, Lisa Herrera has been selected to assist Parks and Rec staff with all Senior activities. -Additional signage has been posted at WWCB warning users about coyotes in the area. Class Update Kavita Tankha reported to the PRC that Foothill College would like to coordinate with the Parks and Recreation Department to offer computer classes through the Krause Center for Innovation. Marketing Update The Town has again made a financial donation to Deer Hollow Farm in Mountain View. Activity Guides and event flyers will be placed at the facility. Owl Houses Update Kit Gordon will follow up with Carl Cahill regarding getting the owl houses put up and where on Town property the houses can be located. Nancy Couperus told the PRC that there is an existing owl house at WWCB that needs to be moved because it is mounted too low and in an area with too much activity. Events Update Jennifer Carlstrom reported to the PRC on the upcoming LAHF Pumpkin Carving Event on Sunday, October 27, 2013, from 3-6 pm. She gave the PRC members a handout showing 2012 actual financials and a proposed budget for 2013. She is requesting $1400.00 from Parks and Rec for this year’s event. Motion: The members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee at their October 7, 2013 Special Meeting voted unanimously to give $1400.00 to Los Altos Hills Family for their October 27, 2013 Pumpkin Carving event. Motion Julia Zarcone/second Scott Vanderlip The LAH Youth Commission will hold their Monster Bash dance on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the American Legion in Los Altos. The YC will use the pumpkins purchased for the LAHF pumpkin carving event for dance decorations. Barn Lighting – The stagecoach needs to be moved up to WWCB. The “Santa” from last year will be used again this year. He provides his own costume, beard, etc. and requests a donation to Relay for Life for his services. The PRC discussed giving an amount equal to what the costs for providing our own Santa would be. Motion: The members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee at their October 7, 2013 Special Meeting voted unanimously to give $250 as a donation to Relay for Life for Santa services provided by ________. Motion Julia Zarcone/second Val Metcalfe Coyotes Julia Zarcone reported to the PRC that she sees two large female coyotes on her driveway every morning. She stated that despite the additional signage there is still an issue with dogs being walked off leash in and around the Preserve. The sheriff has been called, but this has not been effective. Facilities Update The RFP Evaluations Committee will meet on October 9, 2013. Applicants have been asked to submit their “Best and Final” offer for barn management, due today, October 7, 2013. On October 17, 2013 a verbal presentation will be made to Council on the applicant’s proposals. It was discussed that a potential good location for a Town Dog Park would be at the O’Keefe property. The problem with this location is that it is an Open Space Preserve and is designated for passive use only. It was brought to the PRC’s attention that there is renovation going on currently on the upper sports field at Gardner Bullis School. It was discussed and suggested that the PRC inform Town Manager Carl Cahill and request him to find out from the Los Altos School District what the renovations are and who the users of the field will be.
