Meeting Minutes
June 2, 2010
Present: Co-Chairs Julia Zarcone and Scott Vanderlip, Kathy Evans, Patty Radlo, Val Metcalfe,
Rebecca Hickman, Marketing Assistant Sarah Gualtieri, Parks and Recreation Supervisor Eric
Christensen.
Associate Member Courtenay Corrigan.
Guests: Crystal Petralli, Vileena Nagaraj
Call to Order: 9:18 a.m.
Fourth of July Parade
Courtenay Corrigan gave the PRC an update on the Town’s Fourth of July Parade. Road closure
signs are now up at each end of the parade route. Marketing for the parade will be through the
Los Altos Town Crier, Los Altos Hills Family, and local school weekly flyers. The deadline for
inclusion in the Town Newsletter was missed, but this will be a form of marketing for the
future. Courtenay asked the PRC for their opinion on whether horses should be allowed to
participate in the parade. She brought up the issue of liability in case of an accident, stating that
there will definitely be lots of loud noise, which could make a horse shy. Eric Christensen is
going to pursue the issue of liability and get back to Courtenay
Westwind Barn Improvements
Julia Zarcone met with Eric Christensen and Carl Cahill regarding potential improvements to
Westwind Barn, and subsequently attended the Westwind Barn Capital Improvement Meeting.
At this point in the process, the break room and kitchen will be finished out. A laundry area will
not be considered for the following reason: first, because of the high amount of energy use for a
washer and dryer, the Town runs the risk of the LED certification not passing. Second, there is
the question of who pays for and maintains the laundry area and equipment. Lastly, drainage is
an issue. Horse hair from blankets, etc. can easily clog the drain.
Ohlone Camp
Eric Christensen gave an update on the Ohlone Camp. He and Keith Gutierrez still need to meet
to discuss and finalize camp set-up, storage, etc. Any storage will be neutral in color, and
putting up lattice to help hide the storage was discussed. Eric stated that a Port-A-Potty can be
put down the hill and is able to be serviced. The teepee is scheduled to be set up on June 17th at
the usual location at the top of the hill.
Deer Hollow
At the May 20, 2010 Town Council meeting, it was discussed if, and how, the Town of Los
Altos Hills might help in the subsidy of Deer Hollow. The Town of Mountain View has asked
area communities if the would “chip in” to help maintain Deer Hollow as a regional asset. The
Town Council decided to give $10K to the Friends of Deer Hollow, if the following conditions
are met:
- Los Altos Hills residents would receive priority registration for all Mountain View
recreation programs and classes
- Los Altos Hills residents would not pay non-resident fees
- the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Department would receive space in the
Mountain View Activity Guide to advertise one Los Altos Hills program
Julia Zarcone suggested to the PRC that instead of advertising one program in the Mountain
View Guide, that we advertise one facility with it’s associated classes instead. It was discussed
that if the PRC advertised Westwind Barn, the YRRP, private riding lessons, Ohlone Camp and
Riding Camps could be promoted.
Recommendation: Motion made by Rebecca Hickman and seconded by Val Metcalfe. The
members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee at their June 2, 2010
regular meeting unanimously voted to recommend to Council that the Los Altos Hills
inclusion in the Town of Mountain View’s Activity Guide be Westwind Barn oriented, to
include information on the Year ‘Round Riding Program, private riding lessons, Ohlone
Camp, and Riding Camps.
Activity Guide
Eric Christensen told the PRC that David Bellis, the music director for the Bullis Charter
School, was interested in establishing a youth choir for the fall and winter. Bellis wants to have
20 plus members, beginning with grades 7-12, with the program running 16-17 weeks.
It was discussed by the PRC that there are other choir programs in the community and that these
should be looked into to insure that this program is not duplicating what is already available.
The Los Altos Hills Youth Commission would like to hold a Holiday Book Drive. Eric said that
he needs to have a “blurb” from the Youth Commission with all information about the event by
June 23, in order to be included in the Activity Guide.
Eric also reported that new for this fall will be a program, Green Bean Kidz. taught by Ellen
Gibson, a former resident of Los Altos Hills. She will have classes for ages 0-5, and 5-11,
providing outdoor education. Classes for the pre-schoolers are with a parent and will be during
the day. Classes are after school for the older children. The classes will be held at Westwind
Barn and the preserves.
Julia Zarcone received an email from the Aging in Place Committee at El Camino Hospital
regarding having some of their senior seminars in Los Altos Hills. For this fall, the Parks and
Rec Department will offer a Senior Seminar on nutrition and exercise. Eric Christensen will
work with the Aging in Place committee to have other seminars as well.
Eric Christensen is going to arrange to have Alex Atkins come to the next PRC meeting to talk
with the members on his design philosophy, as well as to discuss the cover for the Fall/Winter
Activity Guide with committee. The PRC would also like Alex to use more photos in the Guide
that are from actual Los Altos Hills programming.
New Committee Chair Nominations
The PRC needs to vote on new chairperson(s) for the committee. The nominations and vote will
be held at the July meeting.
