June and August meeting minutes approved as amended. Motion by Scott Vanderlip, seconded
by Val Metcalfe.
Hoedown Update
Sarah Gualtieri informed the PRC that the Hoedown was being publicized in the Los Altos
Town Crier, Facebook, and the Activity Guide. She also said that the large banner placed at the
corner of Edith and Fremont has been stolen.
Set-up will be on Friday, and will be mostly done by the town crew. The remainder of the set-up
will be Saturday morning. Jaime Lucia will be providing the sound system.
The Youth Commission will be working at the event, helping with crafts and selling popcorn
and caramel apples. Volunteers are still needed for pouring wine after 5:00 p.m. and craft clean-
up. Kathy Evans requested that as much be taken down on Saturday evening after the event as
possible. Kathy will perform a detailed inventory of craft items after the event.
Ohlone/Nature Camps
The PRC discussed that the Ohlone Camp was first conceptualized as camp educating campers
about the local Ohlone Indians, showing how they lived, their stories, beliefs, and culture. This
camp is unique to Los Altos Hills and the PRC wants it to continue as such and not become a
nature camp. It was suggested that the Ohlone Cultural Center be contacted to get additional
content for the camp. Kit Gordon, Rebecca Hickman, and Eric Christensen will meet with Keith
Gutierrez to discuss the format and content of the camp, and to come up with a vision for next
summer.
Deer Hollow Update
Eric Christensen reported to the PRC that the immediate financial crisis at Deer Hollow Farm
has been averted for this year through an increase in fees and private donations. The deficit of
$110K is now down to approximately $30K. The Los Altos Hills Town Council has requested
input from the PRC regarding a Town donation of $10K to Deer Hollow Farm, and if the PRC
is in favor of an ongoing Matching Funds Program. After discussion the PRC formulated the
following recommendation:
Recommendation: The members of the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Committee,
at their September 8, 2010 meeting, unanimously voted to recommend to the Town
Council that an initial donation of $10k be given to the City of Mountain View for Deer
Hollow Farm in exchange for:
- Los Altos Hills resident registration priority and resident rates for all programming
at Deer Hollow Farm
- the Town of Los Altos Hills would be allowed to place Parks and Recreation Activ-
ity Guides at both Rengstorff Community Center and Deer Hollow Farm
Due to the financial gap being covered, and with the immediate crisis averted due to private
and other cities’ donations, the PRC recommends that the matching funds donation program
be postponed. The PRC would appreciate that the City of Mountain View make any financial
requests from the Town of Los Altos Hills during the Town’s annual giving period, to be
considered against other donation requests. Motion Patty Radlo/second Scott Vanderlip
Activity Guide
The current Fall/Winter Activity Guide is now in residents’ hands. Feedback from the PRC for
Alex Atkins is that the committee is very happy with the balance between text and photos in the
Guide, as well as the photo and background chosen for the front cover. The PRC would like to see
this as the template for future guides.
Eric told the PRC that going forward he would like to highlight the Town’s Pathways System in
the Guide. Discussion of ways to be more inclusive of the Pathways System included: have a
blurb in the Guide about the monthly Pathways Walks and/or having a half page feature on the
system, and either including a Pathways Map or how to obtain one, along with contact
information.
Eric discussed with PRC members factors that will be affecting the time-line of the next Activity
Guide, which include the upcoming Holidays, when the “competition” (other area towns) will be
sending out their Guides, and that Alex Atkins will be on vacation for 2 weeks around Christmas.
After discussion the PRC decided that they would like to have the Spring/Summer Activity Guide
in residents’ hands by the first week of February 2011. A subcommittee to help with the
Spring/Summer Activity Guide was formed and will include Kathy Evans, Kit Gordon, and Eric
Christensen.
Val Metcalfe brought up to the PRC that currently the majority of senior programs and classes are
offered on Wednesdays. She suggested that programming be spread out throughout the week so
that we are not competing against our own programs.
PRC Joint Meeting With Los Altos PARC
The joint meeting between the Los Altos Hills PRC and the Los Altos PARC is scheduled for
October 6, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Hillview Community Center, Room 2. Issues to be discussed are:
- Senior Programs/Senior Committee
- Program Marketing
- Los Altos Parks Master Plan
Any requests for items to be discussed should be sent to Eric.
Purissima Park Safety Signage
Eric gave the PRC a handout showing current safety signage that is posted at the Hillview Youth
Baseball Field, and discussed possible safety signage for Purissima Fields. It was discussed that
both the Town and Sheriff’s phone numbers should be included on the signs, and that the signs
should be posted at each field. He also discussed netting on Field #1 to keep balls from going into
the Town Riding Arena – he will look into pricing for netting. Discussion of this item will be
brought forward to the next PRC meeting.
New Business
Councilmember Rich Larsen is interested in holding several classical music events during the year,
and he would like the PRC to take this on. The PRC will wait for additional information and then
will discuss the request.
Next meeting is Wednesday October 13 at 9:00 a.m. at the Parks and Recreation Building
Meeting Adjourned
Respectfully submitted,
