Meeting Minutes
April 23, 2009
Present: Co-Chairs Scott Vanderlip and Rebecca Hickman, Kathy Evans, Julia Zarcone,
Val Metcalfe, Patty Radlo, Parks and Recreation Supervisor Eric Christensen, and
Councilmember Jean Mordo.
Committee Meeting brought to order at 9:03 am.
Pathways walk/Run Update
Scott Vanderlip gave the PRC an update on the Pathways Run. Tee shirts were ordered
on April 22 and should be received by Tuesday, April 28. Roadside signs advertising the
Run have been put up at various locations throughout the Town. Rebecca Hickman will
do a Costco run for water, bananas, and power bars. Coffee cake will be donated by
Hobee’s. Patty Radlo has sent emails and fliers to local high schools asking for
volunteers. Scott will hold a meeting the night before the event to go over the final
logistics and determine where all the volunteers will be placed.
Edith Park
The Town Council has decided that improvements to Edith Park will be in the form of
beautification as opposed to more major renovations and improvements. Council would
like Edith Park to be a “nice entrance” into the Town. Council stated that the site was not
appropriate for activities and programming due to the amount of traffic and the lack of
parking.
Westwind Barn
Councilmember Mordo told the Committee that a draft request was being put together to
ask the Fire District for funds, either $100,000 or 10%, for WWB retrofit based on
safety/fire concerns. The Supporters of Westwind Barn will be asked to contribute
$200,000.
Eric Christensen reported that the Round Pen is now complete, and that the upper feeding
pasture is almost complete. Invitations to bid are out for the Upper Arena, and once the
process is complete, the project will begin on a mutually agreed upon date between the
Town and the vendor.
Hoedown Update
Jaime Lucia stated that she and Kathy Evans have been working on Craft Activities for
the kids attending the Hoedown. Jaime gave the committee a handout describing the
various activities, their set-up, location, and required supplies. Supplies are being
collected, but Jaime said they will stop for now until they have a better idea of the
number of children that will attend the event.
Kathy Evans talked about some of the games for the kids, as well as some of the food
elements – with the theme for both being “old-fashioned”, i.e. bean bag toss, milk bottle
bowling, lemonade, and homemade ice cream. She also talked about the various groups
that could be invited to participate either with an information table or an activity – PRC
table, Pony Club demonstration, etc.
Julia Zarcone has been looking into Vineyards that could provide wine tasting at the
Hoedown. She is looking for vineyards and/or wines that are “horse-themed”. She told
the PRC that wine could not be sold at the Hoedown, but glasses for the tasting can be
sold. The vintners could promote their wines by giving contact and pricing information
to the attendees.
Purissima Fields Opening
The Little League fields at Purissima are now open. Official dedication of the fields will
take place on Sunday, May 3, at 3:00 pm.
Golf Tournament
Eric Christensen reported that a contract will be signed shortly with Palo Alto Hills
Country Club (PAHCC) for the Parks and Rec Golf Tournament. The date for the
tournament is set for Monday, September 14. The Town needs to give a $2000 deposit to
reserve the date. The deposit is totally refundable up to 14 days before the tournament.
Spring/Summer Program Updates
The Nature Journaling class held at Byrne Preserve was very successful. Ten children
were enrolled in the 3 hour class. It was suggested that future classes should be longer.
The Growing Pumpkins class to be held on May 3, already has 37 enrollees.
The Spring Break YRRP camp has 10 registrants.
The Ohlone Camps have 82 registrations over the 8 weeks of camp.
The summer YRRP currently has 21 registrations.
Hoppin’ Hounds Update
Rebecca Hickman reported that the event was a huge success, with over 100 dogs
attending. $900 was raised for the Humane Society Shelter.
Next PRC meeting is scheduled for May 21, 2009, at 9:00.
Meeting adjourned at 10:25 am.
Respectfully submitted,
Patty Radlo
