HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 20 Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes August 20, 2009 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Parks and Recreation Building Present: Co-Chairs Julia Zarcone, Scott Vanderlip, Committee members Rebecca Hickman, Kathy Evans, Val Metcalfe, Jaime Lucia, Steve Johnson Committee Council Liaison: Council member Jean Mordo, Staff: Eric Christensen, Sara Gaultieri Regrets: Karin Bergh, Patty Radlo Guest: Kieth Guitierrez, Ohlone Nature Camp Director The Committee meeting was opened by Julia Zarcone at 9:00 am. Minutes for the July 16, 2009 meeting were approved unanimously. Kieth Gutierrez – Summer Ohlone Camp Post-Mortem Kieth said the camps went well but would like to recommend that ages 5 - 7 be a morning session with ages 8 – 11 be afternoon. He also recommends that the star thistle be cut prior to camp. The trails also need to be reworked to eliminate too many switch backs. He also suggested that a port-a-potty be placed closer to the camp site and that the drop- off picnic area at the corner of Byrne Preserve be trellised or canopied for shade. He would like to establish a base camp near the creek area at the bottom of the Westwind Property were the trail starts from the jump area. He suggested that the Eagle Scouts could clear the area out, especially where there is stacked deadwood, as a community service project Hoedown Update Kathy reported that the posters are going out and flyers to schools. She said they need more wine donations. Catering, band and craft stations are all set. 50 Hoedown programs were scanned and printed at Town Hall. To cover the cost of flowers they will be sold at the Hoedown for $15.00 each. Wine glass sales should cover cost of poster printing (sell 150.) Westwind Restoration Update Eric said they were ripping out floors this week. They will recycle as much wood as possible. They will also be moving concrete slabs. The project is on schedule with a March timeline for finish. Golf Tournament Update Steve discussed critical need for marketing of the tournament. Sara Gaultieri will step in to work with Town Crier and other advertising venues. Jean Mordo said he would inform the Rotary Club. Patty will inform Little League. Information will also go out to LASD schools. Fall/Winter Program Guide Update In process. Sara Gaultieri has designed a Parks and Rec Facebook page to get programs out to the community. Joint Meeting with Los Altos Parks and Rec Commission A motion was made to request that the Committee add an urgent item “Joint Meeting of the LAH/LA Parks and Recreation Committee/Commission as new business to the agenda. The motion passed unanimously Those Committee members interested in attending: Scott Vanderlip, Patty Radlo, Julia Zarcone and Kathy Evans. The proposed dates from the Los Altos P & R Commission for the meeting are Sept. 28 or Oct. 2 with a 5:00 pm time and venue to be announced.
