HomeMy WebLinkAboutJune 18 Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes Monday, June 18, 2007 9:30 a.m. Town Hall Chambers Present: Ben Gikis, Rebecca Hickman, Patty Radlo, Karin Bergh, Eric Christensen, Parks and Recreation Supervisor Regrets: Val Metcalfe, Steve Johnson, Scott Vanderlip The Committee meeting was opened by Rebecca Hickman at 9:35. The minutes for the May 21 meeting were approved unanimously. Westwind Standing Committee The Westwind Standing Committee recommended that the Friends share the cost of hiring an architect for repairs and remodeling of Westwind Barn with the Town. The Town Council voted in favor of this recommendation, Westwind Barn Lower Arena Status At the May 24, 2007 Council meeting, the Town Council approved a loan of $28,000.00 to the Friends of Westwind for repairs to the Westwind Barn lower riding arena. Ad Hoc Facilities Committee Eric said that the Committee is looking to develop a Master Plan for the little League fields. One of the scenarios would be to make Field 2 into a multi-purpose playing field. This could be done using a portable fence to outline correct measurements for different sports. Estimated cost to refurbish Field 2 as a multi-sport field (drainage, turf etc.) is $80,000.00. Ben said that the Little League needs a real score board on Field 1 and would like to look into possible donations for the score board. Ben said that the bathroom situation at Little League games and events is getting bad and a permanent port-a-potty down at Field 1 would help the problem. He said a port-a-potty would benefit P & R camps and LAHHA events as well. Eric said he would talk to Carl about this. Eric spoke with Fremont Hills Country Club (FHCC) regarding the possible use of their swimming pool for programs. Eric said the initial reception from FHCC to the idea has been positive. SPLASH in Los Altos is also interested and suggested a possible scenario of donations from Town residents for pool use. At present, FHCC fulfills the convenience and central community location requirements. Eric said he will be inviting Foothill College to the next Ad Hoc Committee meeting to discuss field use for our programs. Summer Program Registration Eric said that all horse programs are full with waiting lists. Lacrosse and Skyhawks camps are strong. Still need more sign-ups for Ohlone Camp. Mad Science is doing well. The Red Cross Babysitting Certificate Program will take place at Town Council Chambers on June 23. Rebecca will be in charge of opening and closing the program. New Program Ideas Eric suggested exploring some new program offerings for fall and winter such as Kids Love Soccer, two more baseball camps and Blue Angels Snowboarding Camp in Sierra Tahoe. Town Picnic Review Eric reported that it was the largest event so far with 1533 people. The P & R craft tent went well and Ben did a great job of scooping ice cream. Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Rebecca Hickman, Secretary
