Meeting Minutes
Monday, May 21, 2007
9:30 a.m. Town Hall Chambers
Present: Co-Chair Val Metcalfe, Ben Gikis, Rebecca Hickman, Scott Vanderlip, Patty Radlo,
Karin Bergh, Eric Christensen, Parks and Recreation Supervisor
The Committee meeting was opened by Val Metcalfe at 9:35.
Westwind Standing Committee
The Westwind Standing Committee met and are researching architects to start the
renovation project of Westwind Barn.
Westwind Barn Lower Arena Status
The issue of repairs to the lower arena were discussed. Safe footing is a priority
especially in light of the continuing growth of YRRP and Summer Horse Camp program
uses. Due to a misunderstanding, some work has already proceeded on the arena repairs
with no foreknowledge by the Friends of Westwind. Ben Gikis said that Westwind as a
Town facility and this is a facility repair.
*A motion was made to recommend to Council that a $28,000 loan be made to the
Friends of Westwind to cover the costs of the lower arena repairs. Discussion ensued.
The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. (See attached recommendation to
Council.)
Ad Hoc Facilities Committee
Steve Johnson and Scott Vanderlip met Council members Craig Jones and Breene Kerr to
research recreation facilities development and land based on the results of the February
2007 Parks and Recreation survey.
Summer Program Registration
Eric said that all horse programs are full with waiting lists. Sports camps are doing well.
Still need more sign-ups for Ohlone Camp and Red Cross Camps. Mad Science is doing
well.
Publicity for Programs
Eric said the ad run in the Town Crier has increased registration numbers as well as
interest in Town programs. The posted Rec signs have also helped. He will also be
promoting the programs at the June 3 Town picnic.
Event Review
The April 7 Hoppin’ Hounds was a success raising over $1000.00. The event review with
Ruby Collary from 5 Paw Bakery, Eric, and Rebecca helped in planning next year’s
event. On the table is another dog-oriented Halloween event also to raise funds for Palo
Alto Animal Services.
Earth Day, April 23 was a huge success with over 900 people in attendance. Eric voiced
some concern about this event becoming to large for the venue. (Westwind Barn.)
Scott said the May 12 Pathway Run had over 300 runners and was the best yet in terms
of organization, traffic control and participation.
Town Picnic – June 3
Eric will be at the Town picnic along with volunteers staffing g the pine cone craft table
for Parks and Rec.
