Meeting June 19th 06
Minutes
Attendees: Steve Johnson, Ben Gikis, Tod McClemore, Val Metcalfe, Patty Radlo
The meeting was called to order by Val Metcalfe, at 9:35am.
Park Bond Applications in process include the renovation of the Town Riding Ring.
This project is substantially complete, and will receive sign off from the State next
month. Project was within budget.
Also in process is the refurbishment of the bleachers at the Little League fields. Carl
Cahill, City Manager, will recommend to Council that $18 - 20K is requested for this
project, from the Park Bond 2000, and an application to the State be made. The
Committee has previously supported this. The total cost of the project is expected to be
$24,000, and Little League has committed to pay $6,000.There was some discussion on
the best materials – wood, aluminum, or Trex. Tod will get estimates for Trex.
A third project which has been discussed is a Parks & Recreation Arena at Westwind.
The riding program is currently limited by the availability of prime time arena hours and
would benefit from a dedicated riding area suitable for beginning riders.
YRRP Update All camps are full, with waiting lists. A request to Council for
continuation of the payment of stabling through January 07 will be made in July.
Facilities Meeting Continuation The Ad Hoc Recreation Facilities Committee at the
Council level has formally been disbanded. Parks & Recreation Committee will continue
to search for a suitable solution/ location for a sports field. Various ideas have been
considered. The O’Keefe property consists of 8 ½ acres of relatively flat park land. The
Town also owns a plot on Story Hill Lane and consideration has been given to selling it
for development and using the money to purchase useable flat acreage. Steve will
approach Craig Jones to discuss directions. Next meeting Committee will take a field trip
to visit sites.
Banner for Publicity Tod showed the Committee the completed banner design. These
will be posted in four main locations in Town, two weeks prior to Program Registration.
It was suggested that one could be permanently mounted at the Little League Fields. Tod
will check feasibility.
Town Picnic Due to vacation plans of members of the Community Relations Committee,
Tod was primary contact person on the day. He reported that the Picnic has gone well,
except that there had been no plan for clean-up. If P & R are to continue to be heavily
involved in this event, it was agreed that conflicts with Little League activities and the
summer camps programs would suggest that the picnic be held in September at the
beginning of the school year.
Update on Summer Programs Camps are going well and are well subscribed. Baseball
is an eight week activity and has a good attendance. Ohlone Nature Camps start next
week.
Activity Guide for Fall and Winter is 95% completed. Registration for Residents will
be August 1st, and August 15th for Non-Residents. Additional activities planned are a
Harvest Trail Ride, and a Motor Bike ride from Town Hall to La Honda, as a fund raiser
for the American Red Cross.
Little League Update Schedule for the All Star Games was discussed. Tod reported that
security systems, including motion sensors, were being installed. Steve Garcia is working
with law enforcement to determine best requirements. Apparently there has been some
unauthorized use of the Fields, and batting cage.
Other Business Ben has received a request for use of the LL Field for a Dog Agility
Class. This will be treated as a regular field rental initially, subject to availability. If the
class is well organized and popular, P & R may consider sponsoring the class next year.
Next Meeting Monday July 17th. Committee is requested to meet a t Town Hall at
9:30am, and allow 3hours for a field trip to inspect the completed projects at the
Town Ring, Little League Field, and locations for future projects.
