Meeting Notes
Tuesday, October 24, 2017
Parks and Recreation Building
1. Roll Call; Committee Membership
Meeting conversation began at 7:40 PM. Present: Roger Burnell, Lana Einschlag, Lew Jamison,
Roy Woolsey, less than the five members required for a quorum. Associate member: Ron Knapp. Town
Staff: Sarah Robustelli, Chris Knopf. Without a quorum the meeting could take no action, but discussed
various topics as summarized below.
2. Introduction of Any Members of the Public. None.
3. Review of Prior Committee Meeting Minutes. No comments were made on the minutes as drafted.
4. Review of Prior City Council Meetings
Lew Jamison was approved by Council to return to full membership status on the Committee. After
considerable Council discussion, Roger Spreen was chosen as Vice Mayor for the 2018 year.
5. Welcoming of Town Newcomers
Roy Woolsey reported that there were 18 newcomers to Town in September. Roy provided mailing
labels for mailing of the newcomer welcoming letter. A draft follow-up welcoming letter prepared by
Karen Emerzian was reviewed in detail by the Committee. Roger Burnell made a number of editorial
changes, and Sarah Robustelli will type up the letter with revisions for further Committee review.
6. Los Altos Hills Town Picnic
Paper copies of the 2017 Town Picnic report, approved by the Committee last month, were available
for Committee members.
Sarah Robustelli discussed an alternative train for 16 to 24 people that she has tentatively reserved
for the 2018 Town Picnic; the Committee agreed it was very attractive and the engineer really looked like
an engineer. She also discussed a different type of rock wall and the possibility of carnival games.
Roger Burnell will look into the availability of the pirate for the featured entertainment.
7. Discussion of Results of Event Survey
Updated results for the event survey were briefly reviewed, from a total of 56 respondents, vs. 38
from a month ago. A corporate tour (Tesla, Facebook, Google, etc.) was most popular, with half the
respondents indicating an interest in that type of event. Neighborhood ice cream gatherings were second,
and an architectural tour of Stanford was third.
8. Report on Meeting with Parks and Recreation Committee
Roy Woolsey discussed his attendance at part of the October 16, 2017 meeting of the Parks and
Recreation Committee. That committee listened to a presentation on dispute resolution by Paul L.
2
Schechter and also talked about the Los Altos Community Foundation Dispute Resolution program.
After some discussion, Community Relations Committee members thought that the Committee should
not duplicate the Dispute Resolution program, but rather see it is well publicized in the Our Town
newsletter.
The Parks and Recreation Committee also discussed the idea of a neighborhood contact list that each
resident of Los Altos Hills would compile to meet neighbors and have emergency contact information.
Community Relations Committee members felt that not many town residents would be interested or have
the time to be involved, and there was some concern about privacy. Roy related that one resident on his
street contacted all residents on the street, who agreed to provide contact information that would be
distributed to everyone on the street. Roy said other streets could do the same. Roy and Roger reviewed
the Community Relations Committee’s Neighborhood Network effort, with Roy talking about the 2009
effort led by Joan Sherlock and distributing Joan’s proposal that was approved by the Committee in
2009, and Roger providing historical background that the whole effort grew out of the Safety Committee.
The Committee will consider this matter further next month when hopefully a quorum is available.
9. Additional Items or Contributions from Committee Members.
Committee members spoke highly of the History Committee’s “Innovators of Los Altos Hills” event.
10. Date for Next Meeting and Adjournment
The next meeting will be the fourth Tuesday in November, which is November 28, 2017. Roy will
contact all members to encourage attendance. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
