TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS
Community Relations Committee
Tuesday, February 10, 2014, 7:30PM
Chair Roger Burnell called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2014.
Members present were Roger Burnell, Karen Emerzian, Ron Knapp, Nena Price and Barbara
Waldeck. Associate members Bill Downey, Bob Mabe, Mansour Moussavian and Council
Liaison Jon Radford also attended the meeting.
Introduction of Members of the Public
John Harpootlian, Vice Mayor and Kjell Karlsson were at the meeting.
Review of Committee Minutes of September 9 meeting
The minutes of the November 11, 2014 meeting were approved by acclamation on a motion by
Ron Knapp seconded by Karen Emerzian.
Nena Price moved and Ron Knapp seconded a motion to approve the minutes of January 13,
2015. All were in favor.
Review of Prior City Council Meetings
John Radford reported that the Council discussed the role of committees and their members at the
February 9th meeting. Each committee chair should set standards for attendance for their
committee. The Council will not manage attendance but it is checking attendance and how often
there is no quorum for a scheduled meeting. The twenty committee members who have not
completed the Brown Act training will have until July 1 to meet this requirement. It can be done
on-line. Committee member terms have been kept at four years.
Subcommittee Reports
A list of possible special events compiled at the January meeting was reviewed. New suggestions
were: events at the Sharks, Earthquakes or 49er’s stadiums, the Computer History Museum,
Foothill College annual Physics Show, a picnic at AT&T park, small neighborhood events, bus
transportation to a San Francisco symphony, museum or theater. Some of these possibilities were
briefly discussed. No conclusion or decisions were reached.
2015 Picnic
Car Show - Bob Mabe reported on preparations for the Car Show. They plan to have about 40
cars, all beautiful classics. Los Altos Hills residents who own classic cars will be invited to
participate first. As usual there will be three awards chosen by the Mayor, the City Manager and
the City Clerk. Bob and Bill Downey are trying to arrange to have a Tesla on display. Bob said
they work closely with Sarah Gualtieri and all the arrangements go smoothly. Last year the
County Sherriff’s Department had a helicopter on display in the same field as the cars. Barbara
Waldeck will ask her husband, Gary, to arrange this again this year. Bob ask that he be informed
if the helicopter will be on display. When it lands it kicks up a cloud of dust that covers the
pristine cars. The owners need to be warned to arrive after the helicopter.
New Business – Sixtieth Anniversary Party
John Harpootlian attended the meeting to bring up this topic. Roger reminded the committee that
there were no anniversary events for years one through forty-nine. The Fiftieth Anniversary was
held in January 2006 at the Los Altos Country Club. The event, which cost $95, was sold out.
Two hundred and fifty guests attended. After much discussion and reminiscing the committee
thought that another party at the Los Altos Country Club would be a fun event and would attract
residents who did not normally attend the picnic. Dates were discussed. Roger Burnell will
contact the Country Club to see if either Friday, January 29th or Saturday, January 30th is
available. John Radford suggested that if the committee is going to concentrate on an
Anniversary Party it should postpone arranging any of the special events discussed earlier.
2015 Picnic
Music – Ron Knapp has arranged for the Andre Thierry Band that plays New Orleans zydeco
music to save the date of the picnic for us. They will charge $1200. Ron needs Sarah Gualtieri to
produce a contract that Ron can give to the band to sign. A $600 deposit is required. The
committee listened to a few excerpts of the band’s music. Barbara Waldeck made a motion to
hire the band. Karen Emerzian seconded the motion. All were in favor.
Food – At the January meeting Michael Schoendorf suggested we could have better food for less
money if we got chickens from Costco. This would involve having volunteers cut up the chicken,
buy the side dishes and condiments, paper plates, plastic ware and napkins and serve the food.
After much discussion of the difficulties of finding enough volunteers, keeping the food hot and
doing all of the work the caterer did last year, the committee decided we didn’t have enough time
to research whether a do-it-yourself picnic was feasible. The general consensus was to hire
Mavericks again this year. Barbara Waldeck was asked to contact them for two quotes, one for a
duplicate of last year’s menu and another for the same menu with white meat added.
Entertainment – Roger Burnell said that he would talk to the Pirates again to see if they are
available. The Committee discussed having the magician back for a third year. John Radford
said if everyone enjoyed his performance there was no reason not to keep hiring him. Roger
Burnell will look into getting a dog show either in addition to or instead of the magician. Roger
reported that the other vendors we have each year have been contacted and will return.
Old Business
Barbara Waldeck will check with Deborah Padovan on the Newcomers Program. The town had
taken over this responsibility a few years ago. Are they continuing to mail letters offering a
packet of information to be picked up at Town Hall or are they mailing the packet?
As always, the committee needs new members. There are three openings.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
The next meeting is on March 10th.
Respectfully Submitted,
Barbara Waldeck, Secretary
