TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS
Community Relations Committee
Tuesday, May 19, 2015, 7:30PM
Chair Roger Burnell called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2014.
Members present were Roger Burnell, Karen Emerzian, Ron Knapp, Nena Price, Michael
Schoendorf and Barbara Waldeck. Associate members Bob Mabe, Mansour Moussavian and
Linda Seidel also attended. Town Staff Liaison Sarah Gualtieri and Town Council Liaison John
Radford were present.
Introduction of Members of the Public
Cathy Perga and Maryann Malcolm attended the meeting.
Review of Committee Minutes of February 10 meeting
The minutes of the April 14th meeting were approved by acclamation with the following
corrections: Sarah Gualtieri, Town Staff Liaison, was present and the minutes of the February 10th
meeting were approved.
Public Comment
Maryann Malcolm, a member of the Town History Committee, said that the Committee has plans
to place a time capsule in the cupola that used to sit on top of the old Town Hall. The cupola has
been relocated to the grounds of Town Hall. Maryann would like some suggestions as to what
should be put in the capsule. Roger Burnell asked what time frame they were considering.
Maryann replied that the Committee was thinking of objects that were typical of life in 2015. The
CRC suggested that the History Committee have a table at the Town Picnic to gather input from
town residents. Barbara Waldeck asked how they planned to secure the capsule inside the cupola
to keep it from being removed. She suggested that it be buried under the cupola to safeguard it.
Sarah Gualtieri said that she thought she had a tent Maryann could borrow to provide shade at the
picnic.
Cathy Perga asked, as a representative of the Library Commission, that the Bookmobile be placed
in a spot with more traffic at the picnic. She felt that its location last year was too far away from
the main activity and that not many people stopped by. Roger Burnell said they would look for a
better place on Saturday, June 6th when setting up the ball field. Cathy said that she would be
there to help.
Review of Prior City Council Meetings
John Radford reported briefly on the last few Council meetings. There were two in March and
one in April. Two of the topics the Council is working on are a new master plan for pathways
and sewers. He said the Council was having a long budget session on May 20 and asked for the
Committee’s budget request. The picnic budget is $40,000 and the Committee asked for $20,000
to offset some of the expenses of the 60th Anniversary Party in January. John thought these
numbers were reasonable.
Subcommittee Reports
The Committee decided to postpone plans for the 60th Anniversary Party until the August
meeting. Right now we need to concentrate on the picnic.
2015 Picnic
Car Show – The invitations to participate in the car show were sent a little late this year. Right
now answers are just dribbling in. There are 32 responses for 45 places so far. Sarah Gualtieri
said she didn’t think we needed to worry about getting enough participants. Neal Rayborn is
working on getting arcane cars. The Bobcats will play on a small stage in the corner of field one
as they did last year. Roger Burnell will get the frames for the awards. Deborah Padovan, Carl
Cahill and Courtenay Corrigan will be asked to meet at 1 p.m. to review and judge the cars for the
awards. The award announcements will be made on the main stage between 2:40 and 2:50 p.m.
Music – The contract with the Andre Thierry band has been finalized and a deposit sent. The
band will bring its own speakers and we will try to connect their sound system with the Town’s.
Food – The contract with Mavericks has been finalized. The cost is $6.25 per person. They will
arrive at 11:00 a.m. and serve food from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Roger suggested that there be a sign
placed by the food lines stating that food service will not begin until 1p.m. He also asked that it
be made clear that there are three identical lines for food in order to keep everyone from forming
a single line.
Entertainment – Sarah Gualtieri said that she has been unable to contact Stars and Stripes for
two months. She was so frustrated that she began to look for a substitute vendor. Apparently
there are several vendors who have trackless trains so there is no reason for us to continue to use
Stars and Stripes. Barbara Waldeck said that we have had nothing but trouble from Stars and
Stripes and we should hire someone else next year.
Balloons – Linda Seidel has ordered the balloons from Diddams. She will need help to tie them
to the fences.
Registration – After much discussion it was decided that any family registering more that six
will receive an email reminding them that only Los Altos Hills residents are invited to attend the
picnic. An exception will be made for children who were raised in Los Altos Hills and are back
for a visit. Roger Burnell will compose a template email for Sarah to use. John Radford asked
that those residents who forget to register be admitted to the picnic with no restrictions.
Ice Cream - Mansour Moussavian said that Baskin Robbins has been slow to respond as usual.
He will keep after them.
Drinks - Ron has help for beer but needs volunteers for serving wine and soda. He will order
extra root beer for root beer floats.
Games – Nick French and his wife Melissa will take charge of the games again this year. They
have come up with a few new ones. Roger Burnell asked that they suspend the games during the
announcements.
Sarah Gualtieri will buy a megaphone. Ron Knapp said that $60 is plenty to spend on one.
Michael Schoendorf asked if the vendors have insurance. They do except for ones who don’t
present a clear danger such as the face painter and the band.
Old Business
As always, the committee needs new members. There are three openings. Mansour Moussavian
application will come before the Council on May 21st.
Next Meetings – The Committee decided to have the June meeting on the third Tuesday, June
16th in order to give time to write reports on the picnic. The August meeting will be on Tuesday,
August 11th to begin planning for the Anniversary Party in January.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Barbara Waldeck, Secretary
