HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuly 9 TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS Community Relations Committee Tuesday, July 9, 2013, 7:30PM Chair Barbara Waldeck called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday July 9, 1213. Members present were Barbara Waldeck, Roger Burnell, Barbara Cannon, Karen Emerzian, Ron Knapp and Nena Price. Introduction of Members of the Public Kjell Karlsson attended the second half of the meeting. Review of Committee Minutes of June 10th meeting: The minutes of the June 10, 2013 were approved unanimously on a motion by Ron Knapp and seconded by Karen Emerzian. Comments by Members of the Public: There were no public comments. Review of City Council Meeting Barbara Waldeck reported that The Council approved a $15,000 increase to the 2014 picnic budget. The budget is now $40,000. She also announced that the Council finally approved the Art in Public Places policy. The Art in Public Places Committee will be separate from the CRC. Subcommittee Reports Karen Drucker will hold the Art in Public Places Committee first meeting. She is looking for two or three volunteers to serve on the committee. This committee will not be a subcommittee of the CRC. 2014 Picnic Budget As above, the picnic budget is now $40,000. 2013 Picnic – June 2, 2013 The final accounting of the cost of the 2013 picnic is not complete. Linda Seidel, Karen Emerzian and Roger Burnell have not submitted their expenses. So far we have spent $32,260.79. The final total will be well under the 2013 budget of $35,000. 2014 Picnic The date of the 2014 picnic will be June 1. Roger Burnell said he would contact Nick Golden and the magician we had this year to sign them up for the 2014 picnic. The Committee agreed they would like to have the band Jazz Unlimited, who played at the 2011 picnic, again next year. Ron Knapp will contact them. We also agreed to hire Mavericks to cater the food once more. We will contract for them to serve food from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and have the picnic publicity reflect this. We expect the longer serving time and the probable increase in the cost of the food will result in a higher bid. The Committee also discussed the entertainment and decided to hire Magic Mike, the magician who performed at the 2013 picnic. Although we do not usually have the same entertainment two years in a row it was felt that many people missed his show this year due to the lack of an adequate P.S. system. Roger Burnell will contact him. Completion of Old Business Barbara Waldeck has arranged for Janet Barry from the D.A.s office to present a program on Elder Fraud on September 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. Brian Evans, an economics instructor at Foothill College, and his MicroCredit Club students will speak about the KIVA Project that helps alleviate poverty around the world by connecting thousands of people to make small loans to borrowers and partner institutions and the School Fund that lends money to students in developing countries to cover the cost of tuition and books on October 16th also at 7:30 p.m. Introduction of New Business Karen Emerzian moved that Roger Burnell be elected Chair, Nena Price Vice Chair and Barbara Waldeck Secretary for the 2013 – 2014 year. Ron Knapp seconded the motion. All were in favor. We have four vacancies on the Committee. Committee members agreed to make an effort to recruit new members. The August meeting will be cancelled. The next meeting will be September 10th when we will discuss the arrangements for the two fall speakers. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m., Respectfully submitted, Barbara Waldeck, Secretary
