Community Relations Committee
Tuesday, June 10, 2013, 7:30PM
Chair Barbara Waldeck called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday June 10, 1213.
Members present were Barbara Waldeck, Roger Burnell, Karen Emerzian, Ron Knapp and Nena
Price. Associate members Bill Downey, Bob Mabe, Jamie Lucia and Mansour Moussavian were
present. Sarah Gualtieri, Town Staff Liaison, also attended the meeting.
Bob Mabe suggested that we appoint Neal Rayburn an associate member of the committee. He
was very helpful with the car show and will probably continue to help in future years. Roger
Burnell made a motion to appoint him. The motion was seconded by Nena Price. All were in
favor.
Introduction of Members of the Public
There were no members of the public present.
Review of Committee Minutes of April 16 meeting:
The minutes of the May 14, 2013 were approved unanimously on a motion by Ron Knapp and
seconded by Karen Emerzian.
Comments by Members of the Public:
There were no public comments.
Review of City Council Meeting
Barbara Waldeck reported that she presented the Art In Public Places policy to the Council. The
Council requested a few minor changes to the policy. Deborah Padovan will include them and
the Policy will be placed on the June agenda.
2014 Picnic Budget
Barbara Waldeck reported that the budget for the 2014 picnic was cut to $25,000. Our request for
an increase to $40,000 has been placed on the June 20th Council agenda. Several members of the
committee indicated that they would try to attend the Council meeting to support the picnic.
2013 Picnic – June 2, 2013
In spite of several glitches, the picnic was declared a success. Most of the minor problems
stemmed from the lack of a public address system. This meant we were unable to announce the
start of the games or the magic show. The two other problems were the delay in the arrival of the
train and inflatables and the freaked out pony incident that resulted in two children being injured.
Sarah Gualtieri shut down the pony rides after the accident.
Karen Emeraian reported that registration proceeded smoothly. She went over the registration
lists to see if she could determine about how many non-residents attended the picnic. Out of the
attendance of 1905 our best guess is that 125 were probably not residents of Los Altos Hills. The
committee thought that it is not worth alienating picnic goers by grilling them about the
residential status of all of the people they have registered for this small percentage.
After years of complaints of the music being too loud, this year the complaints were that it was
not loud enough. Gary Waldeck, mayor, is going to try to get the town to run power along the
back fence of the ball field. If this is done the band could be located in a more central position
with the tents surrounding it.
Sarah Gualtieri has been dealing with Nick Golden at Stars and Stripes over the delay in the
arrival of his equipment. She has negotiated a $500 reduction in price.
Jamie Lucia said that the games went well. There were about 35 children participating. There
would have been more if we had been able to announce that the games were beginning.
The food supplied by Mavericks received rave reviews. There was a great deal less garbage than
there has been in the past. The crew brought by Mavericks was extremely helpful even bussing
the tables when they weren’t busy serving food.
Ron Knapp reported that he managed to get over $800 of beer donated to the picnic by the
supplier because we do not have a liquor license. The sangria made by Courtenay Corrigan was a
great hit. The wine was purchased at WalMart for $1.97 per bottle.
Mansour Moussavian received many compliments for his handling of the ice cream. The Youth
Commissioners dispensed the toppings and kept the tables as neat and clean as possible. There
was one extra tub that was donated to the Little League snack shop. Mansour thinks that it would
be helpful to get some dry ice to keep the ice cream cold in the future.
The Gunn High School robotics team demonstrated their winning contraption for throwing and
retrieving Frisbees. This was another event that we should have announced over a P.A. system.
They would like to be included next year.
The Palo Alto Mobile Emergency Operations Center truck was kept very busy. Some residents
wondered why we did not invite the Santa Clara County MEOC instead. Next year we will
attempt to display the Santa Clara County helicopter on Field 3.
The Car Show was a hit as always. Three cars failed to show up for various reasons but Kelly
Porter was a late entry with his Cadillac and won the Mayor’s Award. The Award ceremony
would have benefitted from a P.A. system.
2014 Picnic
The date of the 2014 picnic will be June 1. Memorial Day is probably on May 26th.
Introduction of New Business
Barbara Waldeck has arranged for Janet Berry from the D.A.s office to present a program on
Elder Fraud on September 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. She is also arranging for Brian
Evans, an economics instructor at Foothill College, to have his MicroCredit Club talk about the
KIVA Project that help alleviate poverty around the world by connecting thousands of people to
make small loans to borrowers and partner institutions. That program is tentatively scheduled for
October 16th.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Waldeck, Chair
