Members present were Barbara Waldeck, Barbara Cannon, Karen Emerzian, Jane Kawasaki, Ron Knapp and Nena Price. Barbara Waldeck opened the discussion by reporting that the Council had voted against the Committee’s request to increase the budget by $10,000 to $45,000 to cover the cost of a barbecue chicken dinner. She stated that the Committee needed to decide among three options: 1) No food except ice cream sundaes, let residents bring their own picnics. 2) A box lunch with a choice of sandwich, chips and a cookie probably provided by Subway and would cost $10,000 to feed 2,000 residents. 3) Find ways of cutting the existing budget and getting a lower bid for the barbecue. The Committee members discussed these three options at length. 1) It was felt that it is important to serve lunch. The logistics of each family trying to pa rk close enough to the Park to carry in a cooler full of food seemed daunting. We also felt that many of the older residents who arrive early and spend the afternoon camped out at a table come mainly for the food. 2) The sandwich option costs almost as much as the barbecue. 3) Cutting the budget and trying to get Maverick’s to lower their bid was the option favored by everyone. Barbara Waldeck was delegated to talk to Maverick’s and to go over the budget with Sarah Gualtieri. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
