Chair Roger Burnell called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday September 13, 1213.

and Barbara Waldeck. Courtenay Corrigan, Council liaison to the Committee, also attended the
meeting.
Introduction of Members of the Public

Review of Committee Minutes of July 9th meeting:
The minutes of the July 9, 2013 were approved unanimously on a motion by Ron Knapp and
seconded by Karen Emerzian with the following corrections: Under subcommittee reports: Karen
Drucker will hold the Art in Public Places Committee meeting, not chair it. Under 2013 Picnic:
Roger Burnell has not submitted his picnic expenses. And, under 2014 Picnic: Roger Burnell will
call Magic Mike to ask him to entertain us at the 2014 picnic. He was the entertainment last year
but the Committee felt that many residents missed his performance because of an inadequate P.A.
system.

2014 Picnic Budget
The 2014 picnic budget is $40,000.
2013 Picnic – Final Report
Barbara Waldeck presented the Report on the 2013 picnic for approval. Several corrections were
made. The expenses have changed from $33,854.31 to $33,874.31 with the addition of Roger
Burnell’s expenses. This raised the cost per person in the chart on page 4 to $17.78. Roger
Burnell suggested that the chart showing actual picnic expenses from 2011 through 2013 include
the budgeted amount and how far under or over it the actual expenses were. Barbara will make
the changes and additions.
2014 Picnic – Advance Planning
The date of the 2014 picnic will be June 1. Roger Burnell reported that he had been in touch
with Nick Golden of Stars and Stripes and Nick is committed for next year. Roger has asked that
they arrive at 10:30 a.m. in order to avoid the problems of the past few years. Roger has tried to
reach Jazz Unlimited without success. Ron Knapp agreed to follow up. Roger will call Magic
Mike soon. Barbara Waldeck will reserve Maverick’s to cater the barbecue. Roger asked that we
try to get them to hold their 2013 price. Barbara thought we would need them to bring a few
more workers and serve food from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. longer than they served last year. This will
increase the price somewhat. Courtenay Corrigan had several suggestions for the next picnic: ask
the sheriff to fingerprint children again, ask either the Fire Department or CERT have fire
extinguishers available for residents to fire at a target to teach them how to use one and
implement some sort of senior identification program. We would like to have the MEOC and
perhaps a County Sheriff Department helicopter on display. Barbara Waldeck said that Gary
Waldeck would work on arranging this. Roger Burnell thought, since it is the charge of our
Committee to bring residents together, it would be appropriate to have some way of identifying
newcomers to Town. Courtenay said just a request from the podium asking newcomers to stand
up and be recognized might accomplish this. Roger added that we could hire a comedian for a
half hour to get the crowd to interact. Ron Knapp mentioned that he had looked into a petting zoo
last year and still thought it would be a popular attraction. There was some discussion about the
dog show we had in 2012 but it was decided to stick with the magician. Courtenay mentioned
that she was not sure if the Corrigan’s would have enough wine to donate for sangria in 2014.
She will have a better idea in January. She also said that it was extremely difficult to set up the
picnic when residents arrive at least a half-hour early lining up for beer and wine. The committee
decided to keep the gates closed until 1 p.m. next year and to warn residents that this would
happen on the invitation flyer.
Completion of Old Business
Barbara Waldeck has arranged for Janet Berry from the D.A.s office to present a program on
Elder Fraud on September 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. Brian Evans, an economics
instructor at Foothill College, and his MicroCredit Club students will speak about the KIVA
Project that helps alleviate poverty around the world and the School Fund that lends money to
students in developing countries on October 16th also at 7:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed at both
of these events to provide refreshments. Barbara Cannon and Nena Price volunteered for the
September 25th presentation. Ron Knapp said he could help on October 16th. Barbara also said
that Carol Gottlieb has asked the committee to partner with the History Committee at the Old
Timers Heritage Gathering on October 20th at 2 p.m. Karen Emerzian volunteered. Barbara will
let Carol Gottlieb know.
Review of Current Committee Charter
Roger Burnell suggested the Committee take a look at our current charter and think of ways to
fulfill its points. Barbara Waldeck pointed out that we no longer are responsible for distributing
welcome packets to new residents and that point needs to be removed. Roger said that in the past
we had a big band dance that eventually morphed into the picnic. He also mentioned the Foothill
College summer musical event and the NASA tour for residents. Stanford cancelled the planned
tour of the campus due to a visit to the campus by the Dalai Lama. Ron Knapp said he didn’t see
why we should ask residents to go to Palo Alto when we have a college with our boundaries that
has done a great deal of recent building. Barbara Waldeck agreed. Roger asked the committee
members to continue thinking about possible events.
Completing the Committee Roster
Roger mentioned we have four vacancies on the Committee that need to be filled. Barbara
Waldeck said that Mansour Moussavian would probably change his status from associate to full
member. Roger asked that we give some thought to recruiting more people to fill our ranks.
Ron Knapp made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Courtenay Corrigan seconded it. The
meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Waldeck, Secretary
