TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS
Community Relations Committee
Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 7:30PM
Chair Barbara Waldeck called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November
8, 2011. Present were Roger Burnell, Barbara Cannon, Karen Emerzian, Kathy Evans,
Roy Woolsey and John Radford, Council Liaison.
Introduction of Members of the Public
The Committee introduced themselves to Katherine Popell from the Senior Commission
who was visiting. Kjell Karlsson arrived later.
The minutes of the November meeting were approved unanimously as sent.
Public Comment (items not on the Agenda)
Katherine Popell reported on the work being done by the newly formed Senior
Commission, a joint effort with Los Altos. Twenty-three percent of Los Altos Hills
residents are over 65 years of age and another 16% are between 55 and 65. A survey was
sent to all seniors in both towns. There was a 23% response rate. Transportation was
found to be the main concern of this group. Katherine said that Los Altos Hills has been
designated an age friendly city and that makes it easier to apply successfully for grants.
The Commission is currently looking into which available grants might be applicable to
our towns. The Committee suggested that the Newcomer Packet should have a page of
information about the Senior Commission. Katherine will work on it.
Review of the City Council meeting:
The Council elected Rich Larson Mayor for 2012 and Gary Waldeck Vice Mayor. The
meeting was brief followed by a reception.
Subcommittee reports
New Resident Outreach: Roy Woolsey had a list of 20 names and addresses of new
garbage accounts from November and December. Kathy Evans and Karen Emerzian will
call on these new residents and report on the results at the February meeting. Kathy
knows of two residents who would be interested in volunteering for this project as soon
as she works the bugs out of it. Roger suggested that a “we stopped by” letter should be
composed to leave at houses where no one is at home.
Neighborhood Network: Joan Sherlock was not present. Not much is happening until a
replacement for Steve Garcia is found.
Youth Commission: Kathy Evans reported that the Youth Commission is holding a
leadership conference in February. They plan to invite about 200 teens to have about 50
attendees.
Annual Newsletter Phone Insert: Kathy Evans presented a draft of the phone list that will
be included in the September newsletter. Roger Burnell used his eagle eye to edit the
copy. Kathy will have Alex Atkins prepare a final copy and will bring it to the February
meeting.
Town Events
The Holiday Barn Lighting was held on December 4th from 1– 4 p.m. Ron Knapp and
Karen Emerzian provided the refreshments including cookies from Costco, hot apple
cider, sparkling apple juice and some leftover wine that Ron had on hand.
Hot apple cider and cookies were provided for the Town Tree Lighting. Leftover cookies
from the week before were used up and all the cider was consumed.
Plans for the 2012 Picnic:
Barbara Waldeck distributed a checklist of jobs that need to be assigned for the picnic.
The committee went over it. The results are attached at the end of the minutes. She also
passed out a copy of the Picnic article that will be in the March Town Newsletter.
Ron Knapp was not present but he has contacted the Touch of Class Band and has an
estimate of $2100. The band seems very enthusiastic about playing at the picnic.
Roger Burnell has finally managed to talk to the pirate who expects to be busy the
weekend of our picnic. The pirate suggested Daredevil Chicken Club. Roger is pursuing
that idea and looking into alternatives.
Completion of Old Business:
Nothing is happening about new volunteer shirts. The issue has been tabled for the time
being.
Introduction of New Business:
There was no new business.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:54 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Waldeck
