Town of Los Altos Hills
Community Relations Committee
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, October 30, 2007
Council Chambers
1. Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by Chairman, Roy Woolsey. Present: Chairman,
Roy Woolsey. Members, Karen Emerzian, Ron Knapp, Patty Woolsey, Roger Burnell, Nick Osborne.
Associate Members, Barbara Waldeck, John Swan. Youth Commissioner, Ting Ting Liu. Associate
Youth Commissioner, Lisa Kellman.
2. Review of Prior Committee Meeting Minutes
The minutes of the last Committee meeting were approved as distributed.
3. Welcoming of Town Newcomers
Patty Woolsey reported that since the last Committee meeting, one sheet with 20 names of
newcomers was delivered to Town Hall for mailing of the newcomer-welcoming letter.
4. Report on Council Approval of Committee Chair
Roy Woolsey reported that the Committee’s request that the current Committee chair be allowed
to serve for another year was on the consent calendar at the October 11, 2007 City Council meeting, and
was approved without discussion.
5. Los Altos Hills Town Newsletter
The choice of a parks and recreation or utility undergrounding article as lead article for the
December Town Newsletter was discussed; Karen Emerzian recommended the parks and recreation topic
as being of more general interest. Roger Burnell volunteered to help with a “meet your neighbor” article
if that were desired, and to write an announcement about the December 7 Volunteer Awards Luncheon.
6. Discussion of Town Website
Ron Knapp distributed his proposed memo to the City Council, and an article from the Palo Alto
Daily News describing citizen criticism of the new Palo Alto City website. The Committee agreed that
citizen input should be provided to the new Town website, and that Committee representatives should
meet with appropriate Town Staff to discuss the website. The Committee made minor changes to the
draft memo and then approved it for submission to the City Council as a memo from the Committee. Ron
will implement the changes, and forward it to Roy Woolsey, who will submit it to the City Clerk.
7. Review of 2007 Town Picnic
The Committee reviewed the draft Picnic report that Roy Woolsey assembled, and made a few
minor suggestions. At the top of page 3, it could be noted that several residents phoned Town Hall to
cancel their reservations after receiving the recorded reminder message. On page 12, item 5 for April, a
note could be added to remind Town Hall not to sort the registration list; this point is also covered in the
first item under “Recommendations for Next Year” on page 4. On page 17, item 4 at the top of the page,
2
“Given” should be “Give.” The Committee agreed that these changes were sufficiently minor that the
Picnic Report should not be reissued to include them. The Picnic Report dated October 25, 2007 was
approved by the Committee as distributed. An earthquake disrupted the meeting for a few moments.
8. Little League Field # 3 Naming Event
Roy Woolsey noted that Duffy Price is serving as event chair and making arrangements for the
event to name Little League #3 in honor of Will Sigua. The event will commence at Noon on Veterans
Day, Sunday, November 11, 2007. All Committee members are encouraged to attend. Patty Woolsey
expressed concern that this naming of a field singles out one veteran when there was already a previous
veteran who was not memorialized and there may be more in future. The Committee decided that this
field naming does not have to create a precedent, and that all veterans killed in action can be remembered
in the plaque proposed for Town Hall.
9. Holiday Barn Lighting Event
Roy Woolsey described the request for Committee participation in the December 2, 2007 Holiday
Barn Lighting Event at Westwind Barn. The Committee agreed to provide cookies and hot cider, but not
hot chocolate. Karen Emerzian volunteered to attend and bring cookies. Barbara Waldeck and Lisa
Kellman also volunteered to help at the event. Roy Woolsey will ask Duffy Price if her coffee maker can
be used to heat cider, and will check the record for the amount of refreshments used last year.
10. Holiday Caroling Event
Ron Knapp and Duffy Price have volunteered to bring refreshments and help with the Holiday
Caroling Event on December 18, 2007. Linda Seidel will bring a pot of glog. Roy Woolsey will ask
Duffy Price if her coffee maker can be used to heat cider, and will check the record for the amount of
refreshments used last year.
11. Nominations for Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards
Roger Burnell described the selection process for Joint Community Volunteer Service Awards.
Copies of the nominating information were available at the meeting, but Committee members did not
propose any nominations. Roger encouraged Committee members to attend the December 7 luncheon.
12. Additional Items or Contributions from Committee Members
Roy Woolsey reminded Committee members about the November 16 volunteer recognition
dinner at the Fremont Hills Club, and the November 1 and 8 public hearing on the noise and safety
elements of the General Plan. Roy said he received a call from Bob Stutz of the Historical Society about
the Society and the new Historical Committee working together; Roy referred Bob to the appointees of
the new committee.
13. Date for Next Meeting and Adjournment
The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, January 22, 2008; the
Committee will not meet in November and December this year. The meeting was adjourned at 8.20 PM.
