Roll Call The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM by Chairman, Roy Woolsey. Present: Chairman, Roy Woolsey. Members, Barbara Waldeck, Patty Woolsey, Karen Emerzian, Nick Osborne, Duffy Price, Ron Knapp, Roger Burnell. Council Liaison, Jean Mordo. 2. Review of Prior Committee Meeting Minutes The minutes of the last Committee meeting were approved as distributed. 3. Welcoming of Town Newcomers Patty Woolsey reported that 14 newcomer names were received last month, not enough to produce a sheet of mailing labels for the newcomer-welcoming letter, so these names will be held until next month. 4. Status of Youth Commissioner Roy Woolsey reported that Ting Ting Liu was appointed Youth Commissioner and Lisa Kellman was appointed Associate Youth Commissioner at Council meetings this month. 5. Report on Presentation of Colors/Pledge of Allegiance at Council Meetings Duffy Price reported that the presentation of colors was last performed at the September 28 City Council meeting. Duffy described the presentation and said that the Youth Commissioner will coordinate future presentations. 6. Review of Charges and Duties of the Committee The Committee held a lengthy discussion of its charges and duties, continuing the discussion from the last Committee meeting. Barbara Waldeck suggested we be more proactive in helping fill vacancies on committees in Town, and it was agreed that each issue of the Town Newsletter would include a box listing current committee vacancies. It was suggested that Town Standing Committees might encourage periodic meetings with Council to confirm their direction. Roy Woolsey reported that the Mayor plans to re-institute quarterly meetings of committee chairs to improve coordination among committees in Town. Jean Mordo suggested the Committee make recommendations on Town donations to community service and other charitable organizations, including development of the criteria and process for obtaining grants from the Town. After considerable discussion of this topic, the Committee agreed that Roy should make a presentation to Council, suggesting this as a possible Committee responsibility and seeking direction from Council. Duffy Price recommended we put information from the Town historical panels into a Town Brochure, which would include information on the spirit of our Town. Roger Burnell suggested the information be brief and that the document be titled something like “Welcome to… the Town of LAH.” This topic should also be presented to Council for guidance. The Committee discussed the Town Website. Nick Osborne believes the website has some great content, but needs a new map and some additional information. Emergency contact information should 2 be readily available. Barbara Waldeck will join the website subcommittee, and Roger suggested it meet mid-day some weekend soon. 7. Los Altos Hills Town Newsletter Duffy Price reported that tomorrow is the deadline for articles for the December Newsletter. Duffy said there would be an article about pumpkins, an article with election results that she will insert just before publication. The Council will recommend the front-page article. Roy Woolsey will submit an article on the Los Altos Hills Historical Society. Roger Burnell suggested a “meet your neighbor” article, perhaps regarding an Asian member of the Town. 8. Initial Consideration of 2007 Town Picnic Ron Knapp reported on his research regarding a band for the 2007 Town Picnic. Ron distributed information on the De Anza “Daddios” Jazz Band, and recommended the group perform at the picnic at the cost of an $800 donation to the band. The Committee concurred, and agreed to not have Ye Olde Towne Band perform in 2007, but to prepare a tactful message to that band. Roger Burnell reported that David Wilson is confirmed for the 2007 Town Picnic. 9. Town Mixer The Committee briefly discussed the Town Mixer proposal, and then agreed to table the matter. 10. Presentation by Committee Chair to County Board of Education The Committee reviewed the statement which Roy Woolsey proposed to make on behalf of the Committee at the December 7 County Board of Education meeting. Roger Burnell recommended adding a sentence that PTAs inspire participation and volunteerism which builds the social fabric among families, parents, children, faculty, staff and neighbors. The Committee unanimously approved Roy’s statement as amended, and agreed it could become a “letter to the editor”, but only after the December 7 meeting. 11. Additional Items or Contributions from Committee Members Roy Woolsey noted that a Westwind Barn Lighting event has been scheduled for December 3, and that a caroling event will probably take place later in the month. Duffy Price, Karen Emerzian (calendar permitting) and Patty Woolsey offered to help with the Westwind Barn event, and Karen can bring approx. five dozen cookies. Duffy has a pot to heat cider. Duffy will e-mail the date of the caroling. Roger Burnell noted the passion with which some in Los Altos approach the school issue, and suggested that if roles were reversed they should understand the passion with which Los Altos Hills approaches the issue. Barbara Waldeck said that Nancy Kelem suggested we cook a dinner for the Fire Department, to thank the department for the wonderful Picnic barbecues. Duffy Price mentioned the Volunteer Service Awards, and the Committee discussed possible candidates for nomination. 12. Date for Next Meeting and Adjournment The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, January 23, 2007. The Committee does not plan to meet in November or December. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 PM. Minutes prepared by Roy Woolsey, November 1, 2006
