Town of Los Altos Hills
Community Relations Committee
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, June 21, 2005
Council Chambers
1. Roll Call
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM by Chairman, Roy Woolsey. Present: Chairman,
Roy Woolsey. Members, Barbara Lamparter, Roger Burnell, Patty Woolsey. Associate Member, Dan
Alexander. Youth Commissioner, Wei Wei Liu.
2. Review of Prior Committee Minutes
Minutes of the last meeting were approved as distributed.
3. Welcoming of Town Newcomers
Patty Woolsey reported that since the last Committee meeting ten newcomer names were
received. A sheet of 20 labels will be prepared for mailing of the newcomer letter when more names are
received.
4. Review of Town Picnic
Roy Woolsey reported that 1,325 meal tickets were distributed at the Town Picnic, and that total
attendance was probably about 1,350 people, around 150 more than last year. The Committee
unanimously agreed that the Picnic was the best ever. The multiple types of beer were wonderful.
Having more adult attractions, such as perhaps tasting of local wines, might be good. The new games
were well received; the Velcro wall probably needs some rules so that heavy people don’t climb too high
on the wall, the bungee run needs a proactive announcer’s voice to direct the activity, the dunk tank needs
more regular supervision, such as a “barker,” and the obstacle course needs two adults, one at the
beginning and one at the end. David Wilson, last year’s magician was a better entertainer than the
magician this year, and we might consider asking David Wilson to return next year. Ye Olde Towne
Band was great; the band should be thanked and asked to return next year. There were no registration or
food station lines, but there were lines for ice cream, and these lines should be addressed for next year.
The Fire Department should be asked to provide meat-free chili in addition to the regular chili. The LAH
Horsemen’s Association made a wonderful contribution to the Picnic, and should be invited to return next
year. Linda Seidel should contact the rental company regarding set-up of the canopies on Friday and tear
down on Monday, with just set up and tear down of items which are easy to steal on Sunday, to allow
more time for chairs, tablecloths, balloons, etc., to be set up Sunday morning. Recycle bins should be
provided and monitored.
The Committee agreed there should be more coordination among Standing Committees, perhaps
by having quarterly meetings of the Mayor and Committee Chairs, as was done some years ago. It was
moved, seconded and passed unanimously to recommend to the Mayor that such meetings be held.
Total expenses slightly came in slightly under the $17,000 budget. Roy Woolsey will compile
comments on the picnic, final expenses and other information into a draft final report that will be
reviewed in the next Committee meeting. The Mayor sent a thank you letter and certificate to the Fire
Department. The Committee recommended a Town Picnic be organized next year for Sunday, June 4,
2006.
5. Review of New Town Hall Dedication Event
2
The Committee agreed that the New Town Hall Dedication was a great event. The event was so
well attended. Duffy Price will be submitting a list of final expenses for the event.
6. Brigadoon Event at Foothill College
Roger Burnell led a discussion of the Brigadoon event at Foothill College. All members of the
Committee need to help with a marketing campaign, reaching out to friends and organizations in Town
such as the Bullis Charter School, Horsemen’s Association, Westwind Barn, etc., to encourage
attendance. The Committee agreed to reduce the event price to $24 for family members less than 16
years of age.
7. Public Education in Los Altos Hills
Roger Burnell reported on his mediation efforts. He received letters thanking him for his efforts
from members of the Charter School board. In spite of the mediation effort, the Los Altos School District
took the position that it would not allow a charter school at the Bullis site unless the district had full
control over the school, and the Charter School would not relinquish such control to the District. Roger
believes that the solution is for Los Altos Hills to form its own school district.
8. Los Altos Hills Town Newsletter
The Committee reviewed the June Town Newsletter, and agreed that it was beautiful and
informative as always. The Committee believes that the Newsletter requires more of Duffy Price’s time
than Duffy is willing to admit. It was suggested that maybe the Newsletter has become so large that busy
residents don’t have time to read all of it, and that a shorter and less time-consuming to produce
Newsletter may actually be better.
9. Status of Search for New Youth Commissioner
Wei Wei Liu reported on the status of the search for a new Youth Commissioner. Wei Wei
announced the position in the school newspaper, and has two or three interested students. Roger Burnell
offered to call these students on behalf of the Committee to discuss the position. If the students are
interested, they should then fill out an application and attend a committee meeting, either in July or in
October. If more than one student is interested in the position, the Committee should find a way to
accommodate all who may be interested, perhaps by creating an Associate Youth Commissioner position.
10. Initial consideration of Celebration of Town’s Fiftieth Anniversary
The Committee discussed ways to celebrate the Town’s golden anniversary. The Committee
decided to recommend a gala dinner party/dance on Friday, January 27, 2006 (exactly fifty years after the
January 27, 1956 incorporation of the Town) at the Fremont Hills Club. Roy and Roger will advise
Council of this recommendation. The next Town Picnic can also have an anniversary theme.
11. Additional Items or Contributions from Committee Members
None.
12. Date for Next Meeting and Adjournment
The next Committee meeting will be held at 7:30 PM on Monday, July 18, 2005, due to conflicts
with the usual meeting date of the third Tuesday of the month. The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 PM.
