HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 8 DRAFT Los Altos Hills Education Committee August 8th, 2007 Los Altos Hills Town Hall Committee Members Present: Bart Carey, Craig Jones, Dean Warshawsky, Eric Ramberg (by phone), and John Radford (by phone). Others Present: Duncan MacMillan 1) Meeting was called to order by chairman Bart Carey. 2) Proposed attendance areas for the new Bullis School were reviewed. Proposed boundaries are contiguous, including the Yerba Santa Triangle across Foothill Expwy. Still possibility for change, but this is reportedly unlikely. 3) Committee should facilitate communication to LAH residents regarding the new B-P School. Hills residents (such as from PAUSD side and from private schools) will make decisions in Oct/Nov ’07 for attendance in Aug ’08. LASD is expected to officially notify everyone of their new school assignments in Jan ’08. 4) Possibilities for communication with residents: a) Letter. Committee recommended a letter likely in September updating residents. Also an opportunity to inform regarding a hopeful informational meeting at Town Hall. b) Meeting at Town Hall, possibly in October. Collaborate with districts---invite LASD and PAUSD representatives. Invite YST area residents. Meeting would be noticed to town. 5) Transfers from PAUSD. a) PAUSD has approved an MOU with LASD to allow predictable IDT’s from PAUSD to LASD for LAH residents who with to attend B-P School. b) Funding from PAUSD shall follow student when LASD becomes basic-aid. c) A potential problem is the language “This Agreement will remain in place for one (1) year from the latest date of ratification by both signatory Destrict’s governing board………… This agreement will be reviewed for annual ratification by both Signatory Districts’ governing boards.” It appears this agreement, though presumably intended to allow predictable multi-year transfers from PAUSD to LASD, could be changed upon yearly review. The Ed Committee should work with the districts to clarify the intent for guaranteed multi-year transfers that will cover a child from K-6. If the agreement must be reviewed on a yearly basis, any students already attending B-P School should be guaranteed continued attendance even if the agreement is not ratified upon review. d) The MOU states “Funding will occur only if immediately prior to the interdistrict transfer, that student either attended school in PAUSD, or has requested the interdistrict transfer as a kindergartner.” This leaves an unacceptable loophole for private school students on the PAUSD side of LAH who wish to transfer to B-P. Committee members will work with representatives from both districts in an attempt to remove this loophole and see that the MOU applies equally to all students on the PAUSD side of LAH. e) Committee should also work with LASD to approve a document formally accepting the students from the PAUSD side for a fixed period. 6) Next meeting tentatively set for Mon Sept 17th 5PM at Town Hall. Possible review of draft letter to LAH residents at next meeting.
