Special Meeting
February 13, 2013
1.Meeting was called to order at 7:45 PM by Chairman Rose. Present were committee
members Jennifer Carlstrom, Bart Carey, Duncan MacMillan, Karen Schuster, and
Heather Rose.
2.Los Hills City Council member John Harpootlian was present as the City Council liaison
with the Committee.
3.Reviewed and corrected minutes from 11-07-12 Meeting.
4.Committee welcomed new Council Liaison John Harpootlian and new Committee
member Karen Schuster.
5.Discussed the purpose and work products of the Education Committee.
6.Duncan MacMillan presented the public school enrollment report and letter for
2012-2013 as of the 11th day of school. While the majority of the data is based on
actual enrollments and County tax information, the data for Bullis Charter School
enrollments is estimated. For the first time the data includes Parcel Tax and Bond
Revenue figures. The Committee approved Duncan's letter for distribution to the school
districts.
7.The Committee approved a subcommittee of Duncan and Heather to write an Our Town
article for the April 1 deadline with the 2012-13 enrollment data.
8.Heather presented performance data for the public schools. All schools are performing
well above State guidelines and differences among API scores are more likely due to
demographic differences among the schools than performance differences. The
Committee discussed options for making school information more available to the
general community.
9.School District Updates: a) PAUSD is expanding. Lease of Fremont Hills site to
Pinewood not up for renewal until 2033. Gunn HS expected to expand from maximum
capacity of 1.9k to 2.3k students. Bus service still cut. PAUSD is testing "Car Pool to
School" as a replacement. b) LASD working on facility issues with multiple Task Forces
and public Prop 39 meetings. c) MV/LA no reports.
10.Heather provided notes on Safe Routes to School work.
11.John Harpootlian requested the Committee grow its membership and provide more
complete school district reporting for the Council. Heather Rose agreed to start this
process.
12.With no old business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:35 PM.
