HomeMy WebLinkAboutMay 8Minutes of the Los Altos Hills Education Committee Special Meeting May 8, 2013 1. Meeting was called to order at 7:07pm by the Chair, Ms. Rose. Present were committee members Jennifer Carlstrom, Duncan MacMillan, Karen Schuster and Heather Rose. Members not present: Bart Carey. 2. Los Altos Hills City Council member John Harpootlian was present as the council liaison with the committee. 3. John Harpootlian briefed the committee on the requirement for a written report when presenting to the City Council. 4. Regular meeting schedule for 2013: Committee members agreed that having a regular monthly meeting calendared was desirable and that they could implement an every-other (odd- numbered) monthly meeting schedule by canceling meetings. Heather Rose made a motion to meet monthly on the second Wednesday of each month. Karen Schuster seconded it; the motion carried unani- mously. 5. Safe Routes to School: (PAUSD) Miranda Road drop-off entrance to Gunn scheduled for 2014 completion. Safe Route along Manuela on other side of fence from Foothill Expressway needed for bikers to avoid u-turning cars at Arastrad- ero and Manuela. Parents suggest clearing bushes to create a rural path- way along the fence from Manuela to the stop light crossing at Foothill and Arastradero. This area is in the City of Palo Alto. Duncan MacMillan agreed to work on the issue. (LASD) New Safe Route pathway along Fremont Ave. is being used by the local school population. Parents asking for crossing guard at Foot- hill Expressway and W. Edith which is in the City of Los Altos, City of Mountain View provides 2 crossing guards per school in city limits from the city Police budget according to Jennifer Carlstrom. Heather Rose contin- ues to gather parent input. APPROVED 6. Heather Rose agreed to provide school crossing data for joint Los Altos and Los Altos Hills City Council meeting, not yet calendared. 7. Karen Schuster provided an update on students residing in Los Al- tos Hills who were County Science Fair winners. She had contacted 2 from Harker and 2 from Gardner and was still looking. Parents were pleased that the City was interested in recognizing their children. 8. Heather Rose volunteered to work on an "Education 411" site for the Fall. General information on where and how to sign up for school if you live in Los Altos Hills would apply to students for 2014-15 school year or those moving to the area. 9. "Our Town" article on the new 2012-13 Enrollment Data was re- jected. Heather Rose presented the 2012-13 data to City Council on April 18. Los Altos Town Crier published an article for the next "Our Town." Due date is July 1 for distribution in September. 10. Committee members found the brainstorming session on sites useful. Would like to continue this work once Enrollment Task Force Find- ing are complete. 11. Committee members reported on education updates: John Har- pootlian on Education Update Forum from State Assembly on expected changes to educational funding at State level; Jennifer Carlstrom on BCS court filling which call out PAUSD IDT students at GBS; Karen Schuster on Geometry NOW movement in LASD; Duncan MacMillan on PAUSD bully- ing issues and new UC policy increasing out-of-state admissions (from 10%-14% in the case of UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz respectively), result- ing in fewer CA residents in UC Colleges; Heather Rose on LASD Growth Task Force community input meeting and Project Cornerstone & Silicon Valley Faces tolerance and anti-bullying programs. 12. Meeting adjourned at 9:15pm by the Chair, Ms. Rose. APPROVED
