Los Altos Education Committee Meeting
Regular Meeting
June 8, 2016
1. Meeting was called to order at 7:04pm by the Chair, Ms. Rose:
Present were committee members (quorum=4) Kay Randall, Heather Rose, Jennifer
Carlstrom, and Lawrence Jau. Guests: Kjell Karlsson, Daniel Huber. Council liaison
John Radford.
2. Approved May Minutes:
Jennifer Carlstrom made a motion to approve the June 8, 2016 meeting minutes as
presented. Duly Seconded. Motion carries unanimously.
3. Public Comments Mr. Huber introduced himself as new family in town with elementary
school children in private school.
4. Gardner Bullis crosswalk & pathways:
• LASD sent letter to LAH Town to continue support of crossing guard.
• LAH City Council will not be making any additional improvements to the crossing.
• Pathways would like to improve the walkthrough quality of the school frontage by
installing a new path.
• School community would like Town to widen the pathway on the South side of
Fremont from Campo Vista to entrance to help with foot traffic flow.
• School community would like pathways on La Paloma into school to be cleared of
parked vehicles during school commute times (8:00-8:30 am, 2:15-3:00 pm); and,
complete the missing link at the corner of La Paloma and Fremont.
5. Enrollment Report Update:
Enrollment Data Request was sent to LASD, MVLA, and PAUSD superintendents. Palo
Alto has not yet responded. MVLA and LASD responded. John Radford will work
directly with BCS to gather this data once PAUSD responds. This is a yearly census of
K to 12 public school enrollments by Los Altos Hills residents. Steve Hubbell will
process this data once it is all received.
6. LASD:
• Working on new tracking survey for a parcel tax on the ballot. LAH City Council
will not endorse unless BCS is included.
• Continue to meet in closed session to negotiate a term sheet deal to purchase new
property for a 10th site. Public can comment before the closed session at 6pm.
Majority of the public process will occur after the term sheet is signed. There is
little to no parent support for a school at 5150 El Camino Real.
7. Discussion on Annual Update Presentation to Council and items to recommend to
Council took place.
Final – approved August 3, 2016
6. New Business:
● Gardner Bullis has new principal.
● LASD kinders are low (as are PAUSD kinders). LASD enrollments continue to grow
with each year after kinders so total enrollments are not low despite the kinder
numbers.
● Teacher shortage nationwide and locally is affecting staffing at all schools. Some
communities are getting creative to attract teachers to their areas.
● No meeting in July.
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned 8:25pm
