Environmental Initiatives Committee
June meeting minutes
DATE: Monday, June 13, 2005
TIME: 7:30 p.m.
LOCATION: 26379 Fremont Road
Los Altos Hills
New Town Hall Council Chamber
1. Call to Order, Roll Call and Pledge of Allegiance
Attendees were Peter Evans (chair), Breene Kerr, Jay Shideler, committee
members, and Mark Jensen.
2. Million Solar Roofs Initiative (SB1) Update – Environment California
Breene reported that SB-1 is being heard at the committee level in the
California Assembly, and that Environment California, a booster of the
measure, will be at the town hall dedication. We discussed whether the town
should take a position on this legislation in light of the existing town support for
PV systems.
3. Green Power Partnership Leadership Award Application
4. PV/Energy Efficiency Ordinance
The committee agreed that we should precede a townwide study session with
further education. It is important for residents to better understand how much
energy they use and how much they would save under a proposed ordinance.
The committee reviewed usage data from members. We concluded that we still
lack examples representative of new larger homes with air conditioning and
pools. The data we have seem to cluster around 2.5 – 7 kWh per year per square
foot. This is well under the Title 24 commercial standard (the town hall is at
about 14 kWh per year per square foot). At the higher consumption levels, a
25% reduction in energy consumption would be entirely Tier 4 energy.
Breene provided some information on Title 24 and the town hall’s Energy
Savings By Design analysis. He estimates it would cost the equivalent of about
one month’s energy bills to perform a site specific energy consumption
projection for a new home using EnergyPro.
5. Information Initiative
The committee discussed some outreach activities.
6. LAH Transportation Fuel Conservation Objective
Jay Shideler offered to spearhead this. Peter Evans provided some information
from an organization that is developing a biofuel recovery and re-use project
with the city of Pacifica.
7. Baseline Town Energy Consumption
The committee discussed possible sources for this information.
