Malcolm, Chair.
2. Roll call
Committee Members present: Nobuko Cleary, Les Earnest, Maryann Malcolm, Barbara
Packard
Committee Member absent: Bill Downey
Council Liaison present: Jean Mordo
Others present: Jitze Couperus, Gary Waldeck
3. Minutes of the 3/16/2010 Committee meeting
Reviewed and approved.
4. Scanning Project
Earnest reported that Internet Archive representatives say they will do a test scan of one
of the Town newsletters on Wednesday (4/21/2010) and will provide a digitized version
for inspection shortly thereafter.
5. Inventory Subcommittee
Earnest announced that the Inventory Subcommittee will continue cataloging historical
scrapbooks on Tuesday, May 4 beginning at 1:30 pm in Council Chambers.
6. Signs needed to identify two paths and a road named for historic figures
Earnest reported that based on the resolution adopted by the Committee at its March
meeting, an email was sent to City Manager Carl Cahill on 3/22/2010 pointing out that in
2008 the Council had named the Packard and Wallace Stegner Paths as well as Margit
Way, leading to Westwind Barn, to honor historical figures but no signs had been erected
(and still haven't).
7. Proposals to rename Edith Park
The Committee again chose to make no recommendation.
8. Plan for a Town History Exhibit
Earnest reported that a memorandum conveying the Committee's resolution calling for
creating a Town history exhibit and inviting public donations for this project was sent to
Mayor Breene Kerr on 3/26/2010 with a request that this be considered by the Council.
9. “Historical” monuments on Fremont Road
Captions on two monuments on Fremont road claim that the Anza party came through
there in 1776, but a review of historic diaries that was brought to the Committee in March
indicates those claims are erroneous. The Committee reviewed and approved these
materials by adopting the following resolution.
The History Committee asks that the Council have the erroneous monuments on
Town property on Fremont Road at the intersections with Edith and Miranda
Roads removed.
Earnest volunteered to prepare a memorandum for Council consideration giving the
background of this recommendation.
10. Proposal to recognize a modern Anza Trail route through Los Altos Hills
Given that in March the Committee recommended to the Council that a
pedestrian/equestrian path through Town honoring the 1776 Anza expedition be
designated, as requested by the National Park Service, a memo making that
recommendation was addressed to Council and given to Mayor Breene Kerr on
3/26/2010.
11. Historic Sites and Structures Inventory Subcommittee
Barbara Packard distributed copies of reports she had written and requested help in
continuing this work, such as revising the criteria for which cites qualify for listing.
Earnest indicated he would attempt to refine the criteria he had proposed earlier, which
the Committee had approved. Malcolm and Cleary indicated that they would be willing
to help with the research.
