HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuly 20DRAFT History Committee Meeting Minutes July 20, 2010 1. Meeting called to order in Council Chambers at 2:10 pm by Mary Ann Malcolm, Chair. 2. Roll call Committee Members present: Nobuko Cleary, Les Earnest, Maryann Malcolm, Barbara Packard, LeeAnn Vojvoda; Bill Downey joined the meeting at 2:29pm. Council Liaison present: Jean Mordo New History Committee member LeeAnn Vojvoda was introduced. It was noted that Barbara Packard now has an email address, so all Committee members are now reachable by email. OLD BUSINESS 3. Minutes of the 5/18/2010 Committee meeting 5/18/2010 Minutes reviewed and approved. The June meeting did not have a quorum, so there are no minutes. 4. Newsletter Scanning Project Earnest reported that the Internet Archive has finally completed their scanning of early Town Newsletters, so he plans to pick up the source materials and do some manual scanning to fix things that didn't turn out right. 5. Inventory Subcommittee Earnest announced that the Inventory Subcommittee will continue cataloging historical scrapbooks on Tuesday, July 27 beginning at 1:30 pm in Council Chambers. 6. Signs needed to identify two paths and a road named for historic figures Earnest reported that repeated requests to the City Manager to get signs erected identifying the Packard and Wallace Stegner Paths as well as Margit Way, as approved by the Council two years ago, have produced no visible results. The Committee will continue attempting to get a schedule established for this work. 7. Plan for a Town History Exhibit Mayor Kerr has not yet put this request from the Committee on the Council agenda. 8. “Historical” monuments on Fremont Road Following Council approval, the two erroneous historical monuments on Fremont Road were promptly removed by staff. The Committee has now unanimously adopted a resolution requesting that the bronze plaques be preserved and added to the Town's collection of historical artifacts. NEW BUSINESS 9. Sunnyvale Museum visit Cleary, Earnest and Malcolm agreed to meet at Town Hall at 10:00am on 8/10/2010 in preparation for a visit to the Sunnyvale History Museum. 10. Research Earnest suggested that in addition to the apparent need to rewrite the existing Town History web page that a list of historical resources be compiled and made public. This would include listings of relevant books, articles and web sites as well as nearby historical museums. Earnest volunteered to compile this information and invited Committee members to send him suggestions for inclusion. Earnest also suggested that someone start a project to identify the origins of street names in Town, as Los Altos has done for their streets. Downey volunteered to initiate this project. 11. Officers The Committee elected Cleary as Chair, Vojvoda as Vice Chair and Earnest as Secretary. 12. Presentations from the floor None. 13.
