HomeMy WebLinkAboutNovember 16DRAFT History Committee Meeting Minutes November 16, 2010 1. Meeting called to order in Parks and Recreation Building at 2:15 pm by Nobuko Cleary, Chair. Committee Members present: Nobuko Cleary, Les Earnest, Maryann Malcolm, Barbara Packard. Committee Member absent: Bill Downey Committee Member resigned: LeeAnn Vojvoda Council Liaison absent: Jean Mordo 2. Minutes of the 10/19/2010 Committee meeting Reviewed and approved. 3. OLD BUSINESS a. Inventory Subcommittee Earnest had reported finding in the Archive a listing of contents of a time capsule reportedly planted in a silver box in Town Hall on the 25th anniversary of the Town’s founding. Karen Jost subsequently reported that it had been found during the reconstruction of Town Hall but that nearly all of the contents had disintegrated. Earnest also found additional Minutes of the LAH Historical Society from the 1990s including their Bylaws, which it turned out they were looking for. Cataloging will continue on Tuesday, November 23 beginning at 1:30pm in Council Chambers. b. Town Newsletter scanning project Nothing new to report. Still incomplete. c. Street and path name history project An article about this project will appear in the next Town Newsletter. d. Dedication ceremonies for paths and a road named for historical figures Will be held on December 5 in conjunction with the Westwind Barn Lighting ceremony, which unfortunately conflicts with the time of a LAH Historical Society lecture to be held in Cupertino. Nick Dunckel of the Pathways Committee will lead a hike over the newly dedicated Packard and Wallace Stegner Paths. e. Update of Town History web page Nothing new to report. f. Historical Sites and Structures project Nothing new to report. 4. New Business a. Proposed amendments to Municipal Code The Committee unanimously recommended that Title 11 of the Town Municipal Code be amended as follows in order to conform with current Town organization. In the following section the phrase "the Los Altos Hills Historical Society or the Town Historian" should be replaced by "the Los Altos Hills History Committee". 11-1.01 Initiation of designation. Initiation of the designation of a structure, natural features, sites or areas having historical, architectural, cultural, or aesthetic significance as a landmark, shall be by the resolution of the City Council, or upon the request of the Los Altos Hills Historical Society or the Town Historian, the verified application of the owner or authorized agent of the property to be designated. The application shall be filed with the City Clerk upon forms which the City Clerk shall provide, and shall be accompanied by all data required by the City Council. (§ 1, Ord. 213, as amended by § 2 (part), Ord. 257, eff. December 7, 1979) The following section should be deleted from the Code, since the History Committee is already recognized as a Standing Committee by Council Resolution. 11-1.02 Los Altos Hills Historical Society—Town Historian. The Los Altos Hills Historical Society is hereby recognized as a private, voluntary committee composed of citizens interested in historic preservation. The Town Historian is a person so appointed by the City Council. The City Council may consult with and shall consider the ideas and recommendations of the Los Altos Hills Historical Society and the Town Historian, respectively. (§ 1, Ord. 213, as amended by § 2 (part), Ord. 257, eff. December 7, 1979). 5. Presentations from the floor Roger Burnell presented plans for a Bay Area History House Museum to be constructed in Cuesta Park when Mountain View funding becomes available. The Committee decided to have no meeting in December but there will be a party at the Clearys on December 11 from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. 6. Meeting Adjourned at 3:36pm Submitted by Les Earnest, Secretary
