March 15, 2011
1. Meeting called to order in Parks and Recreation Building at 1:38 pm by Nobuko
Cleary, Chair.
Committee Members present: Nobuko Cleary, Bill Downey, Les Earnest, Maryann
Malcolm, Barbara Packard.
Council Liaison present: Jean Mordo
Others present: Elisabeth and Charles Garbett
2. Oral history interview
The Garbetts, who are long time Town residents, were interviewed regarding their
observations of the lower Page Mill Road area near where they live. They reported
paying $4,800 for their home in 1947, then had to invest $300 in a well. However there
was no recording device available so there will be no transcript of their perspectives
unless this interview is repeated using recording equipment.
3. Minutes of the 2/15/2011 Committee meeting
Reviewed and approved.
4. OLD BUSINESS
a. Inventory Subcommittee
Earnest had submitted an email report on 3/14/2011 stating that the inventory
project had reached a plateau in that all scrapbooks and artifacts in the Council
closet have been cataloged, though some additional known artifacts, including
books held by the Town Clerk and “historical” bronze plaques that were recently
removed from Freemont Road are not yet accessible. The report also listed a
number of other town records that contain historical information, including
Council and Planning Commission minutes, subdivision maps, Grant Deeds, and
building permits. Earnest advocated making a renewed effort to get the Council to
provide both a separate secure area for storage of historical artifacts and a display
area where selected artifacts may be viewed by the public.
b. Town Newsletter scanning project
Earnest reported that this project is still about two days work short of completion
but that there has been no progress.
c. Street and path name history project
Downey reported that there has been little progress on this project.
d. Municipal Code amendments to recognize History Committee
Amendments were reportedly adopted by the Council in February.
5. NEW BUSINESS
a. Oral history interview conducted per Item 2 above.
Earnest recommended that future oral histories be collected separate from History
Committee meetings.
5. PRESENTATIONS FROM THE FLOOR
None.
6. MEETING ADJOURNED at 3:11 pm
