November 18, 2014
1. The meeting was called to order at 3:30 by Chairwoman Carol Crites
Present: Mary Ann Malcolm, Diane Brauch, May Davenport, Carol Crites, Jitze Couperus,
Catherine Popell and Joe Heinrich (Associate Member) and Council Liaison, Rich Larsen
Not Present: Nobuko Cleary
Late Arrival: Jitze Couperus
Early Departure: Rich Larsen

2. Presentation from the Floor: None
3. Review and Approval of Minutes from October 21, 2014 Accepted as written
4. Committee Reports:
a. Digital Archive & Website: Continues to progress
b. Oral History Project: Nothing new to report
c. Street Names: This is no longer a formal Committee and was placed on the Agenda by
mistake
d. Collection of Current History Information: Diane Brauch will present a draft at the next
meeting
e. Preservation of Historical Landmarks of Interest: There will be further discussion on the
process of how a landmark is designated as a Historical and what this means to the property
owner. Potential designees were discussed.
5. Old Business:
a. Plan for Farm Equipment & Cupola: Jitze Couperus presented the Committee’s proposal to
move the cupola from its hidden spot behind the orchard and install it on the side of the
Town Hall facing Fremont Road. The cupola is part of the Town’s logo and was part of the
town hall structure from its incorporation, 1956, to the completion of the new Town Hall in
1956. The Council was favorable to the proposal and asked that History Committee
representatives meet with two other town committees and staff to discuss the plan with
them. Mary Ann Malcolm and Carol Crites will represent the Committee in this discussion.
The future of the Heritage Preserve will also be discussed with this group.
b. Repair of Shumate Gates: Information was received from the town engineer that the gates
are located in the town Right of Way. Further research is underway on the next steps for
repair and a possible plaque marking the gates significance.
c. Historical Display in April as part of art exhibit: Pieces for the exhibit will be selected and
arranged by the time of the April 19 exhibit.
d. Historical Society Donation: The Council set a town policy for receiving donations and
approved the Los Altos Historical Society gift to the Los Altos History Committee. The
transfer of funds is in the process.
6. New Business:
a. Budget for 2015: Tabled
b. Vote for new associate member, Les Earnest: Tabled
c. December holiday gathering: This was discussed along with a reminder that no Committee
business can be discussed at the gathering.
7. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 pm
