HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 20History Committee Minutes, Tuesday, October 20, 2015 (Approved at the November 17, 2015 History Committee Meeting) Called to Order at 3:34 p.m. Present: Carol Crites, Catherine Popell, May Davenport, Jitze Couperus, Nobuko Cleary, Carol Gottlieb, Mary Ann Malcolm, Nick French Absent: Bridget Morgan, Joe Heinrich Associate Members Present: Linda Swan, Les Earnest, Guests: Lew Jamison Presentations: Lew Jamison, member of the 60th LAH Anniversary Committee, discussed plans to create a video to show at the celebration. He asked for help locating photos of residents or events in LAH over the past 60 years. Jitze Couperus and Carol Crites will look through the archives and digital files and send Lew any relevant photos. He asked to receive the photos by the end of November 2015. Review of Minutes: No corrections; Minutes were approved. Committee Reports: Digital Archives: Les Earnest is still working on improving the quality of the tapes of the Historical Society presentations before any editing can be completed. Oral History: Nobuko Cleary and Nick French reported that the oral history of Bill Downey has been transcribed and reviewed by Bill. They will print the final transcript and give it to Deborah Padovan for public access. Nick will make of list of all the transcripts that are in Deborah Padovan’s office. Old Business: Cupola: Mary Ann Malcolm presented information on purchasing a time capsule for the cupola. A motion was unanimously approved to allow Mary Ann Malcolm to purchase a time capsule costing no more than $750. It will be waterproof with the LAH seal and date printed on the cover. The committee decided to instruct that the time capsule be opened at the 75th LAH Anniversary celebration. 10/11/15 History Event: Carol Crites reported that the presentations by Mark Hylkema and several Taaffe family members were a great success. 130 residents attended and many stayed longer to ask further questions of the guests. Approximate costs of the event were $400 for food, cake, drinks; $60 for wine; and $100 for gifts to the presenters. Heritage Preserve Project: Carol Crites reported on the neighborhood meeting with Mayor Corrigan and Councilman Radford. History Committee members discussed having input on the decisions relating to tearing down Heritage House. Members unanimously passed the following motion: “If the LAH Council approves a resident survey, regarding the use of the Heritage House and the surrounding land, History Committee members would like to review and provide input on the survey as the History Committee will be highly impacted by the outcome.” New Business: LAH One-room School House: Mary Ann Malcolm reported that Dale Briggs, the current owner of property containing the original LAH one-room school house, would like the History Committee to restore it. He has lived in LAH 55 years. The school house was built in 1904 and had 6 students and one teacher. Susan Avilla, LAH Planner, is researching the history of the property. Committee members will look at the site before the next meeting. Holiday Party: December’s meeting is cancelled and instead, members will meet at Carol Crites home at 6 p.m. on 12/15/15 for a holiday dinner. Meeting adjourned at 5:14 p.m. Submitted by Carol Crites
