HomeMy WebLinkAboutMarch 12 1 Next Meeting, April 9, 2004 3 PM Town Hall Los Altos Hills Open Space Committee Minutes of March 12, 2004 (Action Items Printed in Bold) Present: Nancy Couperus, Roger Spreen, Barbara Mordo, Jean Struthers, Mary Davey, Ray Collins Regrets: Elaine Nelson and Patty Ciesla Staff: Not present 1. Call to Order: Roger Spreen called the meeting to order at 3:25 p.m. 2. Introductions/Presentations/Guests: None 3. Approval of February Minutes: Minutes approved. 4. New Business Nancy suggested that the Open Space Committee members have business cards to offer to property owners and meetings at various events. She suggested affordable ways for production and design. Nancy distributed a Daily Journal news article about Defense of Place, whose efforts are now focused on City of Millbrae’s consideration of selling protected open space. The article mentioned the election of Los Altos Hills City Council members who are open space supporters as an example of how cities are moving toward conservationism. Also distributed was an article “Developers Find Payoff in Preservation” from the Washington Post. 5. Follow-up actions from previous meeting: • Conservation Easement Definition Roger Spreen approved of changes in the definition, and there was general agreement that the changes, by allowing greater flexibility, would aid in its passage through the commissions. • LAH Pathways to Open Space Hike Series Ray Collins passed out the hike brochure and discussed how the hike had been promoted in the Town Newsletter and through e-mail distribution. Barbara suggested that Newcomers have an interest in the hike. Ray agreed to send Barbara the information about the hike for distribution to Newcomers. • Byrne Preserve-Habitat Restoration The committee agreed to revisit the topic when Patty Ciesla was present. • Earth Day The Open Space Committee is the primary sponsor for LAH Earth Day Celebration April 24. Nancy distributed a flier for Earth Day Celebration, introducing Leopards, Etc. with its Wild Cats as a major attraction. A discussion followed about other organizations that might have a presence at the event. Nancy discussed various demonstrations including amphibians and electric cars. Barbara offered to call the local winemakers to invite them to participate in a tasting.Jean 2 suggested handing out seedlings and wildflower seeds with an emphasis on native plants. Approximately 300 attended last year. The Committee members unanimously agreed that Duffy Next Meeting, April 9, 2004 3 PM Town Hall did a fantastic job on the presentation board. The board can be used in many events including Earth Day. It was agreed that the committee wanted to take Duffy out to lunch to show the group’s appreciation for her significant contribution. • Adobe Creek Watershed Group Nancy reported that progress is being made, but it’s slow and difficult. The Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) staff will bring the plan to the board in April to request funding in the budget. Nancy noted Susan Mandle’s good work on this project and deserves an award for her work negotiating with neighbors and keeping people working together and moving forward. Find out more. • Memorial Bench Nancy and Jean will look at the stone benches to be located at Byrne. • Prioritizing Goals Roger will send out list of goals established at the last meeting for review for the next meeting in April. • Open Space Property Visit The Committee agreed to meet on Tuesday, March 16 at 4:30 to walk the trails in the O’Keefe Open Space.
