Re: Town Volunteer Disaster Service Worker Use For Silver Alerts
Whenever a senior citizen or person with access or functional needs is missing, they are
at risk. It is important that resources are rapidly mobilized to find the individual as quickly
as possible.
Los Altos Hills Resolution 31-18 dated September 20, 2018, states that the Town has
Workers' Compensation Insurance for all unpaid volunteers providing service to the
Town. This allows the Town to use Community Emergency Response Team and ham
radio volunteers for activities outside the scope of the State Volunteer Disaster Service
Worker Program.
Therefore, Town authorizes the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office request the activation
of Town Volunteer Disaster Service Workers under the following conditions:
• An activation number is issued by the Town or LAHCFD.
• The activity does not pose a threat to the volunteers.
• They are supervised by a Sheriff's Office staff member.
• They are provided a safety briefing prior to being deployed.
• There is an established communication and welfare check plan.
• A Town representative is notified of the deployment as soon as practical.
• In the event of an injury, the supervising staff member will have witnesses write up
brief reports of their observations and submit to the Town within 12 hours.
