Present: Mayor Finn and Councilmembers Casey, Cheng, Dauber and Johnson Absent: None Staff: Acting City Manager Bob Quinlan, City Attorney Sandy Sloan, Public Works Manager Jim Rasp and City Clerk Pat Dowd 2. DISCUSSION OF GENERAL TOPICS OF INTEREST WITH THE REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY CENTRAL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT Fire Chief Doug Sporleder commented that they had been providing fire protection services to the Town since 1996. The emergency response times were very good but the regulatory side of fire protection was more difficult. He referred to their involvement in land issues and their responsibility to enforce the fire codes. Chief Sporleder distributed a copy of their business plan for 1998 — 2003 and a copy of their customer satisfaction survey. In response to an inquiry from Council, Chief Sporleder commented on the required driveway width issue. He noted that they needed 14' in order to open the doors on the trucks. Because of the engine configuration in the truck it was not possible for the firefighters to crawl over and get out the other door. However, it did not have to be all hard surface driveway, just a flat area on which they could land. Chief Sporleder also commented on the sprinkler and/or fire hydrant issue. He stated that there were specific distance requirements for hydrants to the house to eliminate the need for sprinklers. When asked if the weed abatement letter • August 17, 2000 Special City Council Meeting 1 • could be rewritten to be less intimidating, Chief Sporleder stated that they were constantly rewriting this letter in an effort to get the urgency across of clearing the weeds for fire protection but of stating this in a neighborly fashion. He also noted that the weed abatement program was an annual one but the brush abatement program was periodic. Council thanked Chief Sporleder for meeting with them and discussing these issues of mutual interest. 3. PRESENTATIONS FROM THE FLOOR 4.
