Upon wocognition by the Chair, Connissioner Dawson, as a natter of ANNOUNCE - personal privilege, read the following statement: ^I was, frankly, WNiTS taken aback at some of the public reaction to my appointment to PARSONAL t1is present post, and, perhaps, I can allay some of those fears; STATEr4ENT I hone so. I an accused of being a cluster advocate. Not so. I OT COIL. did approve of a cluster--once--a prenosed. development in our neige UlOSON her city of Palo Alto --not in our jurisdiction --but one whit" would materially have aff_cted my vary o>:p_nsive view. Of the choices offerad, an we *aa no control, this so-called cluster seemedto do the least wiolonce to the land, to .cy view, and to equestrian and hiking access to some of our focthills' most beautiful acres. Howb ever, to gan^ralize such approval into approval n. priori of all clusters is, if done innocently, an error, and, if clone d.eliberataly for political ourposos, a technique known in the days of Hitler an:;: Stalin as "too big lio." P-.rsonally, I know of no con arable land in our jurisdiction to which such a solution could be applied; hence, it saes 'cc a tie issue is "Oct. But, I bring no fixed pro -conceptions to ter.: problem of how, best -to do this job. Just as the so-called cluster concept may not be a good answer, so also, I am not convinced that the b st answer is a planning nap which locks as though it ware produced by the packaging engineers of Ralston Purine. at Checkerboard Squarul I would `,opt, we can all approach with open ninds the vary real difficulties of maintaining the character of our cormiunity. Second, I ':ave .^'ways regarded this kind of public service as a tea:., operation, c have a good Council of strong, balanced opinion; we have a good Planning Cocsaission. For myself, I do not pro- pose to let partisanship of any sort interfere with our teamwork approach to the job at hand, Thank you. Let's get on with tae business."
