Preceded by a Study Session
April II, 1973
Study Session
Reel PC 14; Side 2; Track 1 000-279
The Study Session of the Planning Commission of the Town of Los Altos
Hills met at 8:00 PM, with Vice Chal man James Mueller presiding.
A. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
I. Report from Committee to discuss preparation of a study of
geological faults and earthquake hazards in the Town.
Commissioner Lachenbruch reviewed the purposes and history of the
Committee's formation, pointing out that some similarities exist
between the fault system involved in the San Fernando earthquake,
and that which runs through Los Altos Hills, so that a study of such
faults within the Town Is extremely Important.
Town Planner George Mader referred to a fault hazard study carried
E. out by the Town of Portola Valley which resulted in zoning ordinance
changes for that community, forbidding, for Instance, construction
of buildings for human habitation within 100 feet of the fault
line established by the study.
Mr. Mader further reported that the Committee had considered a pro-
posal prepared by Bill Dickinson, outlining a two-stage fault
study, to be completed in two annual phases, each covered by pro-
gress reports on November I and March 1, plus annual reports on
July I. The first annual stage, with an estimated cost of $5500,
would involve a general geologic map and a preliminary fault -
trace map of the half of the Town traversed by the Black Moun-
tain fault complex. The second annual stage, with an estimated cost
of $7500, would Involve a specific evaluation of the potential for
rift hazard for each fault trace mapped. The Report further
offered the name of Mr. Kerry Sieh, a graduate student at Stanford
University, as an appropriate investigator for carrying out such
a study.
Follow Ing discussion, the Planning Commission agreed to consider
further the budgeting and planning of a geological fault study
following a general consideration, at its next Study Session, of
the Planning portion of the Town's proposed budget for Fiscal
'73 - '74.
