HomeMy WebLinkAbout30-95 • • • Ill- , RESOLUTION NO. 30-95 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS SUPPORTING THE PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT'S ISSUANCE OF GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS (MEASURE B) WHEREAS, most schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District were built at least 40 years ago and have not had significant upgrading in years; heating and ventilation systems do not work; electrical systems are inadequate for new technology; roofs leak; and bathrooms for children need new plumbing; and WHEREAS, all schools need seismic renovations and earthquake safety measures, some need additional classrooms, and science classrooms are inadequate for today's instructional needs; and WHEREAS, in October 1992 a Planning Commission made up of community members, teachers, parents and staff was convened to study school facilities and to make recommendations for their repair and modernization; and WHEREAS, in March 1994 the committee recommended a major renovation effort to stop the continued deterioration of school facilities, and the Board of Education has since created guidelines for upgrading every school and placed Measure B on the ballot; and WHEREAS, Measure B will allow the Palo Alto Unified School District to sell bonds to provide funds for the repair, renovation, and maintenance of all district schools including replacing old and worn electrical systems in classrooms, libraries, and laboratories; updating science labs; renovating heating and ventilation systems; replacing worn-out roofs; making seismic upgrades and renovating classrooms; and WHEREAS, our community has a strong tradition of supporting quality education; and while other school districts have been forced to cut essential program services, support from parents and the community has allowed schools in our district to remain among the best in the state; and WHEREAS, all money raised by Measure B is tax deductible, will be spent at school sites, and will stay in our community to benefit our community's children. • • NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the Town of Los Altos Hills hereby endorses School Bond Measure B and strongly urges the community to support Palo Alto Unified School District's School Bond Measure B on the ballot in the June 6, 1995 election. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 3rd day of May, 1995. -- - - ATTEST 1 City Clerk • RESOLUTION NO. 31-9k • RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF MEASURE D FOR THE REPAIR AND RENOVATION OF LOS ALTOS AND MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOLS WHEREAS, the Town of Los Altos Hills acknowledges that both Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools are ranked the best in the state, and have received state recognition for academic and WHEREAS, our community believes the educational reputation of both high schools and the academic success of their students depends on adequate instructional facilities and a safe learning environment; and WHEREAS, both high schools are more than 35 years old, and the'state of California does not provide sufficient funding for the rehabilitation of aging school facilities; and WHEREAS, the Mountain View-Los Altos Union I?ftgh School District established an independent citizens task force, comprised of teachers, parents, district staff, and community members to ekamine the high school facilities and make recommendations for their rehabilitation and repair; and WHEREAS, the independent citizens task force, after visiting the high schools•,and consulting with architects and financial advisors, created strict guidelines for the repair and renovation of Mountain View and Los Altos High Schools; and WHEREAS, $10.5 million in repair costs were eliminated from a previously proposed bond measure, while still allowing for the repairs essential to the academic program; and WHEREAS, if passed by a two-thirds vote, the procieeds of the $58 million bond will be used to renovate current classrooms, acd needed classrooms and science laboratories, repair buildings for seisn4 safety, update electrical service to classrooms, and replace aging plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems at an approximate cost of$25 per year for each $100,000 of assessed valuation for property owners located within the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District boundaries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Tdwn of Los Altos Hills supports the passage of Measure D to repair MouMain View and Los Altos High Schools to continue to provide a quality education to its students. • • • PASSED AND ADOPTED this 3rd day of May, 1995.
