Attention: City Clerk
RESOLUTION NO. 67-94
A RESOLUTION OF THE TOWN.OF LOS ALTOS HILLS
DESIGNATING THE PURI/SHUMATE PROPERTY
A HISTORIC LANDMARK
12775 Viscaino Road
WHEREAS,title 11 of the Los Altos Hills Municipal Code establishes a procedure for the
designation and preservation of historic landmarks within the Town of Los Altos Hills;and
WHEREAS,in accordance with Title 11,the City Council has made findings supporting
its decision to designate as an historic landmark the property known as the Puri/Shumate House,
owned by Ajay and Elizabeth Webster Puri, located at 12775 Viscaino Road,Los Altos Hills,
California, described on Exhibit A,attached hereto and incorporated herein by this reference.
WHEREAS,those findings are as follows:
1. The proposed landmark has significant historical, architectural, cultural, and
aesthetic interest or value since it was constructed in 1915-1916;has been an integral part of the
history of the community of Los Altos Hills being previously owned by the Shumates who
owned400 acres in the area and ran a gentleman's style stable and ranch, and then by Mrs.
Blodgett who ran the Happy Hours Nursery school in the house from the 1950's to the 1970's;as a
location where walnuts and apricots were grown;having the significance of the architectural
style Italian farmhouse style which was changed to a more formal Italian Villa style as the
owner's wealth increased;the house was constructed in the same time period as the Morgan
Manor which is a Historic Landmark in the Town;the exterior and interior areas of the house are
an aesthetic statement of the early 1900's in Los Altos Hills;and the abovementioned families and
site are a part of the cultural history of the Town.
2. The proposed landmark may be designated without imposing an undue
hardship on the property owner, since the designation has been requested by the current
property owner and the Town Historian and the Los Altos Hills Historic Society and approved
by the Town in conformance with Title 11,Chapter 1 Landmark Designation and Preservation.
Additionally, the former property owner requested that the house be placed on the County
Inventory of Historical Heritage Resource Sites in 1973.
• N6I : obED255
3. The approval or modified approval of the application is consistent with the
purposes and criteria of this chapter since the Puri/Shumate property is noted in the Los Altos
Hills General Plan as an Historic site, and is clearly confirmed as an Historic structure and site
from records on file with the Town Historian.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the Town of Los Altos
Hills hereby determines that the Puri/Shumate House is designated as an historic landmark.
REGULARLY PASSED AND ADOPTED this 7th day of September,1994.
