Oak, Quercus agrifolia, of approximately 60 inches DBH_(diameter at breast height), a canopy spread of 60 feet and approximate height of 48 feet. Even though the tree is large, it is probably no more than 75 years old,. Juvenile (light gray, smooth) bark may still be seen on the lower trunk and large limbs. The tree is in good health, having produced 3 to 4 inch, long annual shoot growth last year and 4 _ to'5 inches the previous year, and typical annual shoot growth in years previous to that. would recommend having all dead wood removed, having end-weight removal done from the. south-west canopy. Remove one east-facing limb which emerges at 20 feet above grade approximately 15 feet from the trunk of the tree which has a large decay.site at its base. ' • Pest evidence observed includes: , Cinipid Wasp Galls -1/4 inch round galls on upper surface of leaves. No treatment • recommended. Oak Tree Hopper - minor infestation. No treatment recommended. , Fruittree Leafroller'- This tree is healthy enough to tolerate moderate infestation. If , damage becomes more severe treat in early spring as soon as first insects appear with • Emulsifiable Sevin plus Surfactant. ' ' - , Do not remove supporting limbs from the portions of the canopy which are supporting •• themselves on the ground on the south side of the tree. •' , With proper pruning,'and pest control, this tree should live many more years. Tree #2 is a Valley Oak, Quercus lobata. Trunk diameter is approximately _40 inches, • height is approximately 45 feet and branch spread is 63 feet. The tree is in basically average to ' - 1 - . . It has probably suffered ,from the six year drought of 1986 to 1982. . It is heavily'infested with Turban Galls from the Cinipid Gall Wasp, and has been infested with • . Oak Tree Hopper over a period of years, and as a result, has a very thin canopy. The goal should be to produce a much denser canopy of healthy green foliage. That should be accomplished by: , 1 . •Placing a•3 inch'thick mulch of tree chips over the entire area from the tree trunk to 15 feet± beyond the, canopy (dripline) of the tree. • ' 2. , Remove' any traffic beneath the tree_(as asking anybody on vehicles to travel beyond the canopy of the tree, not beneath it), and to sub-surface fertilize the tree anytime in May'through September of 1994 and every year thereafter until a solid canopy,of dark green 'foliage-is produced. Thereafter, fertilizing should be done on an as-needed basis. , . The tree has a basically excellent structure and needs very little in the way of pruning, except dead wood removal,- No live wood should be removed at this stage until a solid canopy of new green foliage is produced. , . , , , 3. , Pest•Control , , - . ,A.
