RESOLUTION NO.830
RESOLUTION REQUESTING STATE LEGISLATIVE
REPRESENTATIVES TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION
TO OPPOSE INCREASE IN COMMUTE FARES OF THE
SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD
WHEREAS, the public policy of the Southern Pacific Railroad
advocates elimination of Peninsula Commuter Service; and
WHEREAS, the recent one hundred and eleven (111%) percent increase
in passenger fares proposed by the Southern Pacific Railroad may well
discourage further passenger patronage, consistent with the company's stated
obective; and
WHEREAS, the announced fare increase proposal will counter and
offset recent Southern Pacific Railroad advertising for Peninsula passengers
as belatedly ordered by the Public Utilities Commission of the State of
California; and .
WHEREAS, the Public Utilities Commission and the Southern Pacific
Railroad have apparently planned to reduce the attractiveness and serviceability
of Southern Pacific Railroad Depot facilities in San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, it is the public policy of Southern Pacific Railroad not to
accept subsidy for passenger service, to advocate elimination of all passenger
service, while at the same time seeking to continue their freight operations
through Peninsula cities at the considerable expense and occasional annoyance
to Peninsula taxpayers; and V
WHEREAS, the stated public policy of the Southern Pacific Railroad
shows a complete lack of any social or public responsibility in a community
which still tolerates the corporation's existence as a natural monopoly.
