HomeMy WebLinkAbout830 • 410 RESOLUTION NO.830 RESOLUTION REQUESTING STATE LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVES TO TAKE NECESSARY ACTION TO OPPOSE INCREASE IN COMMUTE FARES OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD WHEREAS, the public policy of the Southern Pacific Railroad advocates elimination of Peninsula Commuter Service; and WHEREAS, the recent one hundred and eleven (111%) percent increase in passenger fares proposed by the Southern Pacific Railroad may well discourage further passenger patronage, consistent with the company's stated obective; and WHEREAS, the announced fare increase proposal will counter and offset recent Southern Pacific Railroad advertising for Peninsula passengers as belatedly ordered by the Public Utilities Commission of the State of California; and . WHEREAS, the Public Utilities Commission and the Southern Pacific Railroad have apparently planned to reduce the attractiveness and serviceability of Southern Pacific Railroad Depot facilities in San Francisco; and WHEREAS, it is the public policy of Southern Pacific Railroad not to accept subsidy for passenger service, to advocate elimination of all passenger service, while at the same time seeking to continue their freight operations through Peninsula cities at the considerable expense and occasional annoyance to Peninsula taxpayers; and V WHEREAS, the stated public policy of the Southern Pacific Railroad shows a complete lack of any social or public responsibility in a community which still tolerates the corporation's existence as a natural monopoly. • • NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council ,.of.the Town.,of Los Altos' Hills requests :its legislative-representatives to take whatever action is deemed necessary to have the Public Utilities. Commission• not only ,refuse the Southern`.Pacific Railroad's application for a one, hundred eleven .(111%) :percent increase but to, also demand a roll back in commute . • fares and dictate`a :higherstandard of commuter service as is `necessary „ • to encourage increased patronage of the,commuter service which thereby reduces' operating deficits in favor of a viable transit`alternative, to a costly BART System. .
