APRIL 17, 1956
An adjourned meeting of the city council was called
into session at 8:00 P. M., Tuesday, April 17, 1956, at Puris-
sima School. The following councilmen were present upon roll
call: Bledsoe, Dungan and Fowle; absent Rothwell and Mayor
Treat.
A letter from Councilman Rothwell was presented and
read advising his inability to be present at the meeting and
that he will return on April 21st.
Vice Mayor Dungan summarized, in general, the garbage
contract with the Los Altos Garbage Company. There was a brief
discussion of rates and policy under which they should operate.
Action on the garbage contract was postponed for further con-
sideration.
Road Commissioner Macabee was not prepared to make
a report at this time on a road contract but advised the council
that he is getting together with Mr. Bushnell on April 23rd,
at which time they will discuss how the roads will be maintained
and which roads will be taken care of jointly. The road com-
mittee will then make recommendations to the council. Vice
Mayor Dungan commented that specific recommendations will be
needed on ordinances for maintaining roads after June 30, 1956,
and authorized Commissioner Macabee to make a verbal report
of the conference with Mr. Bushnell at the next meeting.
City Clerk Paulman was directed to confer with City
Attorney Bullis on one violator of the city ordinance on signs
on Magdalena Avenue.
The following maps, approved by the planning commis-
sion were presented for approval of the council. City Clerk
Paulman read letters written by Mr. Simrell, chairman of the
planning commission, to each of the property owners. Mr. Sim-
rell also explained action taken by the planning commission on
each of the maps presented.

After a general discussion, a motion was made by Mr. Fowle,
seconded by Mr. Bledsoe approving the maps in accordance with
the recommendation of the planning commission. Motion carried.
City Clerk Paulman presented and read a letter from
Mayor Treat requesting a leave of absence until June 1, 1956•
RESOLUTION NO. 4was presented and read in its en-
tirety by City Clerk Paulman pertaining to granting Mayor Treat
a leave of absence until June 1, 1956. This resolution was

passed and adopted by the city council of the Town of Los Altos
Hills this _17th day of April , 1956, by the following vote:
Ayes: Bledsoe, Dungan and Fowle
Noes: None
Absent: Rothwell and Mayor Treat
Twenty-one (21) absentee ballots were opened and
counted by City Clerk Paulman and results of the April 10th
election were canvassed. Results of the absentee ballots were
as follows:
Leighton M. Bledsoe - 20
C. Easton Rothwell - 21
Sidney W. Treat - 20
Channing Cathcart - 1
Fred E. Gutt - 0
Richard A. Lockwood - 1 (Total - 63)
Final results of the election were as follows:

Sidney W. Treat - 579
Channing Cathcart - 117
Fred E. Gutt - 103
Richard A. Lockwood - 116 ( Total - 2075)
RESOLUTION N0. was presented and read in its en-
tirety by City Clerk Paulman pertaining to conducting a canvass
of election results. This resolution was passed and adopted
by the city council of the Town of Los Altos Hills this 17th
day of April , 19562 by the following vote:
Ayes: Bledsoe, Dungan and Fowle
Noes: None
Absent: Rothwell and Mayor Treat

Mr. Bledsoe reported on insurance coverage and com-
mented that the present insurance covers only the council and
the mayor. The company will not write a policy for the chief
of police as an individual against claims of false arrest.
Vice Mayor Dungan directed Mr. Bledsoe to obtain a bond for
Chief of Police McKenna to cover him against such claims.
Mr. Fowle brought up the matter of a meeting place
and plans for a city hall and stated that definite plans should
be established and disposition made thereof. A preliminary
sketch has been made Mr. Simrell but plans are still of a tenta-
tive nature. Mr. C. E. Dawson of Magdalena Avenue had discussed
this matter with the late Mr. A. E. Fowle and Mr. J. M. Fowle
about constructing a building on the property offered as a
gift to the Town.
Mr. and Mrs. Dawson offered a gift of $150000 to the
Town of Los Altos Hills to underwrite the cost of this building.
Mayor Dungan, on behalf of the council, acknowledged
the generous gift of Mr. and Mrs. /�Dawson and stated that he

suggested moving immediately in gettin p s drawn, artists',
sketches made, etc.
Mr. Bledsoe expressed regret that all the people of the
people of the Town of Los Altos Hills were not present to hear the
wonderful gesture of Mr. and Mrs. Dawson and suggested that the
names of Fowle and Dawson be perpetuated on the building in some

manner. This matter will be considered at the next meeting.
A motion was made by Mr. Bledsoe and seconded by
Mr. Fowle approving the vouchers amounting to $66.44 for pay-
ment. Motion carried.
Mr. Bledsoe took the oath of office as the first re-
elected councilman ( for 4 years) of Los Altos Hills and was
sworn in officially by City Clerk Paulman.

by Mr. Bledsoe, seconded by Mr. Fowle and passed that the meet-
ing be adjourned until 8:00 P. M., Monday, April 23, 1956, at
Purissima School.
