ORDINANCE 357 <br /> AN URGENCY INTERIM ORDINANCE OF <br /> THE TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS <br /> TO REQUIRE FIRE-RETARDANT ROOFING <br /> WHEREAS, in the last several years fires in communities <br /> located in Bay Area hills have caused extensive property damage <br /> and, in some cases, injury and death; and <br /> WHEREAS, roofs which are not fire-retardant can contribute <br /> to the spread of fires, and therefore <br /> __pose_a_r.isk _to-.the- safety <br /> -of the Town's citizens and their property; and <br /> WHEREAS, the provisions of this ordinance need to go into <br /> effect immediately to protect the public health, safety and <br /> welfare so that structures without fire-retardant roofs are not <br /> permitted while the Town is in the process of adopting an <br /> ordinance requiring fire-retardant roofs; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, the Town of Los Altos Hills does ORDAIN as <br /> follows: <br /> Section 1. Amendment to Code. Section 8-1.02 (2) (Fire- <br /> retardant Roofing) is hereby added to Chapter 1 (Building Code) <br /> of Title 8 (Building Regulations) to read as follows: <br /> Sec. 8-1.02 (2) . Fire-Retardant Roofing. <br /> Roofs on all new structures and additions to existing <br /> structures and any reroofing involving three hundred (300) <br /> square feet or more of an existing structure must have a <br /> fire retardancy classification of A or B, as defined in the <br /> 1991 Uniform Building Code and Uniform Building Code <br /> Standards. <br /> Section 2. Findipgs. The amendment of the Uniform Building <br /> Code made by Section 1 of this ordinance is reasonably necessary <br /> because of local climactic, geographical or topographical <br /> conditions in that: <br /> (a) In the last several years fires in communities located <br /> in Bay Area hills have caused extensive property damage <br /> and, in some cases, injury and death. <br /> (b) The Town of Los Altos Hills is primarily located in <br /> steep hills, with relatively limited access to many <br /> residences, and contains areas which are susceptible to <br /> dangerous fire conditions; <br /> (c) The Town of Los Altos Hills was the scene of such a <br /> fire in 1985 which resulted in the destruction of <br /> property and injury to firefighters; <br />
