POLL CALL & PIEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE (Continued) <br />4, Victor Riches, Los Altos, Pinewood Private School, asked if there was <br />any way to ensure that the bicyclists had to obey the traffic laws? Mr <br />Riches also stressed the importance of educating both children and adults <br />on the issue of bicycle safety rules. <br />Mayor Pro Ten Proft said that this issue would be addressed in the next <br />newsletter. He also mentioned that the Deputies were citing those bicyclists <br />who repeatedly ignored the traffic laws. <br />Mrs. Carol Gottlieb, Chairman, Pathways Camuttee, mentioned that with the <br />possible closing of Covington School the bicycle traffic to Bullis may be <br />even worse. <br />Mrs. Artenas Ginzton, Natema Road, cited the following references for planning <br />better hike routes which she thought the Council and the Cmruttees would find <br />worthwhile: (1) The State Planning Design Criteria for Bikeways in California; <br />(2) The Trails and Pathways Master Plan. Mrs. Ginzton noted that the route on <br />Purissima was already included as a part of the County Trails Plan - Arastradero <br />over to Edith with the mccarendation to have widened shoulders - the standards <br />included in the Master Plan, (3) The Santa Clara Valley Bicycle Association <br />in reference to safe parking for bicycles, and (4) A bicycle safety curriculum <br />being funded by the Palo Alto City School District and available to all schools <br />that request it. <br />Mayor Pro Ten Proft asked the City Manager to keep the Council advised of <br />the procedures taken regarding this issue: separate meetings of the cmudttees, <br />40 joint efforts, etc. The City Manager will ascertain how the ogmittees want <br />to approach the issue and will let Council ]mow. <br />4 <br />At approximately 7:30 p.m., Mayor McReynolds arrived. <br />Melvin L. Hawley, Attorney for Dr. Binder, requested that Item F.1, request <br />for tennis court variance, IADDS OF BINDER, File VAR #7055-78 be continued <br />until the February 6, 1980 Council Meeting. They were anxious to have a <br />full Council to hear their request and one Council member was presently <br />absent. The request for continuance to February 6th was granted. <br />The City Council then adjourned to Executive Session for Personnel at 7:50 p.m. <br />and reconvened at 8:30 p.m. to consider the balance of the Agenda. <br />At approximately 7:55 p.m., Councilwoman Hillestad arrived. <br />At approximately 8:30 p.m., Mayor McReynolds left due to illness. <br />MINNK1t i 7O'. <br />Mr. Paul Nowak, Ias Altos, requested removal of Iter B.6a) for separate <br />consideration. <br />Councilman Perkins requested removal of Item B. 4 b) and Iten B. 6 b) for <br />separate consideration. <br />-2- <br />
