OLD BUSINESS: Reduction of Speed Limit on Fremont Road (Cont'd.): <br />In addition to the traffic investigation required to effect <br />such a change, there is a further requirement in the Vehicle. <br />Code of the State of California that an engineering report <br />be submitted. <br />ACTION: <br />That the City Engineer be instructed to submit ` <br />a report on the reduction of speed limit on <br />FremontRoad, between Manuella and Concepcion <br />Roads. <br />MOTION: Aiken; SECOND: Bowler; VOTE: Passed unanimously. <br />This item will be taken up at the August 2nd meeting. <br />2. Pedestrian/Eeuestrian Underpass at Page Mill Interchange. <br />Councilman Fowle., representing the Council, reported on a <br />meeting with interested citizens, State Highway Engineers <br />and some Staff of the City of Palo Alto. Safety was the <br />basic argument submitted by the citizens, but the State <br />Engineers' studies revealed a very low accident rate occurring <br />at approaches and exits from a freeway where there is suitable <br />signing. However, they admitted having no background in <br />regard to horses and, with this in mind, would reconsider <br />such a crossing if valid arguments were presented to sub- <br />stantiate the horse population which will cross at this inter- <br />change and local participation in sharing the cost for this <br />special situation. <br />ACTION: <br />That the Town of Los Altos Hills go on record <br />asapproving a contribution of approximately <br />$1,000.00 for a crossing. <br />MOTION: .Fowls; SECOND: Aiken <br />Councilman Fowle reported the plan for such a crossing was <br />for one long tunnel costing $60,000, or an alternate plan <br />of four shorttunnels, approximately $6150,000. <br />Councilman Aiken, although agreeing to the necessity of a <br />pedestrian and horse crossing, was opposed to a tunnel due <br />to the inherent dangers, and ..favoredthe push button light <br />type of control, which would cost approximately $25,000. <br />Mrs. I. Goldsmith, who had attended the meeting, explained <br />the details which would besubmitted in a report to the <br />r 6 Highway authorities. <br />-2- <br />
